Syscoin is a proof-of-work Layer 1 network that is merge-mined with Bitcoin and runs an EVM-compatible smart contract chain alongside a Bitcoin-style UTXO chain. It borrows security from Bitcoin miners, adds a finality layer run by staked Sentry Nodes, and offers data availability for rollups, most notably its own OP Stack Layer 2, Rollux. SYS is the native coin used for fees across these layers and for rewarding miners and Sentry Node operators.
Syscoin matters because it is one of the few networks that tries to give EVM applications Bitcoin-grade proof-of-work security directly, rather than through a bridge or a separate staking set. Its own tagline describes it as "Bitcoin's only Modular Network."
Syscoin launched in 2014 as a fork of Bitcoin. Early versions focused on a UTXO chain with native tokens and fast payment features. Over the following years the project added:
Syscoin is run as an open source community project; its documentation describes it as "an open source community dedicated to scaling Bitcoin, especially its proof-of-work security." A list of research papers is published on the research and whitepapers page.
Syscoin is modular, with distinct pieces for execution, settlement, finality and data availability:
UTXO chain The Bitcoin-derived base chain, merge-mined with SHA-256. It hosts SPTs and Z-DAG.
NEVM chain An EVM chain where developers deploy Solidity contracts with standard Ethereum tooling. Its fee market follows EIP-1559.
Merged mining Bitcoin mining pools include Syscoin work in their blocks. The project states that three of the top five Bitcoin mining pools contribute their hashrate.
Sentry Nodes and chainlocks Sentry Nodes form randomly selected quorums that sign chainlocks, a finality mechanism that prevents reorganisations of locked blocks without slashing.
Data availability (PoDA / BitcoinDA) Rollups post data to Syscoin, with proofs settled on the UTXO chain. Rollux uses this design.
Syscoin combines three things that rarely appear together: Bitcoin merged mining, an EVM chain, and a Sentry Node finality layer. The result is a hybrid in which Bitcoin hashrate produces blocks and staked nodes finalise them, aiming to resist 51% and selfish-mining attacks without converting to pure proof of stake. It also positions itself as a data availability layer for rollups, rather than only a smart contract chain.
Block production relies on merged mining, so attacking Syscoin's proof of work means competing with a large share of Bitcoin's hashrate. On top of that, the documentation describes about 1,600 Sentry Nodes serving the finality layer through multi-quorum chainlocks, so a miner cannot quietly reorganise blocks that a quorum has locked. The combination depends on Bitcoin pools continuing to merge-mine and on Sentry Node participation staying broad.
Syscoin is a long-running experiment in extending Bitcoin's proof-of-work security to smart contracts and rollups. For readers comparing Bitcoin-aligned smart contract platforms, it offers a distinct combination of merged mining, node-based finality and an EVM environment.
SYS trades on centralized exchanges and, on the NEVM and Rollux side, on decentralized venues. Check whether a venue supports the UTXO or the NEVM version of SYS before depositing, since the two are separate chains.
