Sui Name Service (SuiNS) is the naming system of the Sui blockchain: it maps human-readable .sui names to wallet addresses, so people can send funds to a short name instead of a long hexadecimal string. NS is its governance and utility token. It matters because names are one of the few pieces of identity that nearly every Sui wallet, app and user touches, and NS holders govern how that shared registry evolves.
The official Sui documentation describes SuiNS as "a decentralized naming service on Sui that maps human-readable .sui names to wallet addresses." Apps use it to display names instead of addresses, to send assets by name, and for identity features in social and messaging products.
Beyond basic names, SuiNS supports subnames (used by its Communities feature as a social identity layer), avatars, linking a name to an address, and simple websites under sui.id.
The official materials we reviewed do not present a founding team or a launch date for SuiNS itself. Two documented facts point to its origins: the smart contracts are published in the suins-contracts repository under the Mysten Labs GitHub organization (Mysten Labs is the company that created Sui), and the NS tokenomics page allocates Mysten Labs 1% of tokens at launch. From this we infer that Mysten Labs was closely involved in building SuiNS, but the project's own pages present it as a protocol governed by NS holders with a separate SuiNS Foundation.
Register a name
A user registers a .sui name through the SuiNS app. Registration and renewal are paid on-chain, and ownership of the name is tied to the user's Sui wallet.
Point it somewhere The owner links the name to a target address and can set records such as an avatar or a sui.id website.
Resolve it everywhere Wallets and dApps resolve names on-chain or off-chain through the integration guides in the Sui docs, so the same name works across apps.
Extend with subnames Name owners can issue subnames, which lets communities and apps give members identities under a shared parent name.
According to the official tokenomics page:
Total supply is 500,000,000 NS. Allocation: 57% treasury (22% community treasury controlled through governance and 35% administered by the SuiNS Foundation), 28% core contributors, 10% community airdrop and 5% governance rewards. Core contributors and early backers vest over 3 years with a 1-year cliff followed by a 2-year linear unlock; the Mysten Labs allocation unlocks linearly over 4 years.
SuiNS is built specifically for Sui, and because Sui is organized around owned objects, we infer that name ownership follows the same model rather than a single registry table. It also bundles identity extras (subnames for communities, sui.id sites, avatars) into the core product rather than leaving them to separate apps.
Ethereum Name Service pioneered .eth names on Ethereum and is the closest model. Solana Name Service plays the same role for .sol names, and SPACE ID aims at names across several chains. SuiNS is narrower: it is built for Sui only, which keeps integration simple for Sui wallets but ties its relevance to the growth of the Sui ecosystem.
Names and tokens live on Sui, so they inherit the security of Sui's validator set. The registry logic is in open-source contracts. Protocol changes pass through NS governance, and the tokenomics page states that a proposal needs participation of at least 1% of the tokens in circulation to be valid. We did not find an audit report on the pages we reviewed, so check the official channels for audit status.
Readable names remove one of the most error-prone steps in using a blockchain. As the default naming layer for Sui, SuiNS sits in the path of everyday transfers and identity on that network.
NS is a Sui token (contract 0x5145494a5f5100e645e4b0aa950fa6b68f614e8c59e17bc5ded3495123a79178::ns::NS). It trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Sui. Confirm the full contract address before buying, since look-alike tokens exist on most chains.
Hold NS in any self-custody wallet that supports Sui tokens. Staking for governance is done through the token portal. Transactions can be checked on Suiscan or SuiVision.
