STRAX is the native coin of the network launched in 2016 as Stratis, which since 15 October 2025 has operated under the name Xertra. The chain, the contracts, and the token were not replaced by that rebrand; only the branding changed, and STRAX remained the ticker on exchanges.
The important detail for anyone researching this asset is that STRAX is not the original Stratis coin. The project has migrated its base asset twice. The original STRAT coin ran on a C# and .NET blockchain derived from Bitcoin's design, and was swapped one-for-one for STRAX in late 2020 when a new chain launched. STRAX was migrated again in January 2024 onto StratisEVM, the Ethereum-style network the asset lives on today.
A live check confirms the current network. The public RPC endpoints at both rpc.stratisevm.com and rpc.xertra.com report chain ID 105105 and identify themselves as a Geth v1.14.7 build, and the old explorer domain now redirects to explorer.xertra.com. In other words, STRAX today is the gas coin of an EVM chain running an Ethereum execution and consensus client stack, not a C# Bitcoin derivative.
Official sources:
Stratis was founded in 2016 by Chris Trew, with a UK-based team focused on enterprise blockchain tooling. The original pitch was blockchain-as-a-service for businesses already working in the Microsoft stack, which is why the early codebase was written in C# and shipped with a full node, a sidechain framework, and smart contracts in the same language.
The timeline since then is a sequence of platform resets rather than incremental upgrades:
2016 to 2020, the STRAT era A proof-of-stake chain derived from Bitcoin's architecture, rewritten in C#, with masternode-style infrastructure and enterprise sidechain experiments.
Late 2020, the STRAX swap A new chain launched and STRAT holders exchanged their coins for STRAX at a one-to-one ratio. The main window ran from 15 October to 12 November 2020, with a later participation window that closed in October 2021.
January 2024, the move to StratisEVM The on-chain swap onto the new Ethereum-compatible network ran from 5 January to 31 January 2024, retiring the previous STRAX chain.
October 2025, the Xertra rebrand Announced on 15 October 2025, positioning the project around decentralized finance and gaming. Major exchanges updated the trading name while keeping the STRAX ticker.
Anyone reading older descriptions of Stratis should be careful. Material that describes a C#-based Bitcoin fork for enterprise blockchain-as-a-service is describing the 2016 design, which has been superseded twice.
StratisEVM follows Ethereum's post-merge architecture closely, using forked Ethereum clients rather than a custom design:
Execution client go-stratis, a fork of go-ethereum, processes transactions and maintains state. The live RPC confirms a Geth 1.14.7 build serving mainnet.
Consensus client prysm-stratis, a fork of the Prysm beacon chain client, runs proof-of-stake consensus and manages validator duties.
Validators Running a validator requires 20,000 STRAX on mainnet, or 20,000 tSTRAX on the Auroria test network, with recommended hardware of four cores, at least 8 GB of RAM, and a terabyte of SSD storage.
Because the stack is Ethereum's, Solidity contracts and standard tooling such as Hardhat work without modification. The 2025 litepaper also describes a zero-knowledge Layer 2 named Verium intended to sit above the base chain, and the project's repositories include forks of zkSync Era components consistent with that plan. Treat Verium as announced direction rather than shipped infrastructure until it is verifiable on chain.
STRAX is used for:
Unlike the original STRAT chain, there is no masternode tier in the current design. Network security comes from Ethereum-style validators.
The honest answer is longevity plus a willingness to abandon its own architecture. Stratis is one of the few 2016-era platform projects still shipping, and it has twice replaced its base chain rather than defend a design that was not winning developers. Moving from a bespoke C# chain to forked Ethereum clients traded away its original differentiator, a .NET-native development experience, for access to the much larger Solidity ecosystem.
That is a defensible engineering decision and a difficult marketing one, because what remains distinctive is the ecosystem and the history rather than the technology, which is now deliberately conventional.
The practical consequence is that StratisEVM competes for developers on the same terms as every other EVM chain, where liquidity, users, and cost decide rather than language support.
Security depends on:
One consideration deserves emphasis: a smaller validator set means the economic security behind the same client software is proportionally lower. EVM compatibility does not transfer Ethereum's security budget.
Stratis is a useful case study in how a first-generation platform project ages. It survived long enough to see its original thesis, enterprise blockchain-as-a-service in C#, lose to a Solidity ecosystem it could not beat, and it responded by rebuilding on that ecosystem's clients while keeping its chain, coin, and community intact. Whether the Xertra pivot into gaming and finance works is unresolved, but the chain is live and independently verifiable, which is more than many of its 2016 contemporaries can say.
STRAX is available on centralized exchanges, several of which updated the displayed name to Xertra after October 2025 while keeping the STRAX ticker. It can also be traded on StraxSwap within the network itself. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction.
STRAX has been listed on venues including:
Pairs are commonly quoted against USDT, BTC, and KRW depending on the venue.
STRAX can be held on an exchange, which is custodial, in an EVM wallet configured for StratisEVM using chain ID 105105 and the official RPC endpoint, or behind a hardware wallet through compatible EVM wallet software.
Take particular care here. Because the asset has migrated chains twice, sending STRAX to an address format or network from an earlier era will not work. Confirm you are on chain ID 105105 before any deposit or withdrawal, and verify addresses on the current explorer.
