StormX (STMX) is the Ethereum token of StormX, a crypto rewards company whose main product let shoppers earn cashback in cryptocurrency when buying from partner online stores. STMX was used for rewards and, until late 2024, for staking that boosted cashback rates. It matters today mainly as a legacy rewards token: the company decommissioned staking in October 2024 citing a potential merger, and its official website no longer serves StormX content.
StormX started as a task-and-rewards app and evolved into a shopping cashback platform. Coverage of the product, such as Flipster's StormX guide, describes it as "a blockchain-based rewards platform that allows users to earn cashback in crypto when they shop" through a mobile app and a Chrome extension, with a network of more than 700 retailers.
The token is an ERC-20 on Ethereum (contract on Etherscan). It was originally known as STORM before trading under the StormX name and STMX ticker.
Website status: as of September 2026, the official domain stormx.io serves a parked-domain landing page rather than the StormX product, and the linked whitepaper address no longer returns the document. Readers should treat any site claiming to be StormX with caution.
StormX was co-founded by Simon Yu (CEO) and Calvin Hsieh. Its roots go back to BitMaker, an app the founders worked on in 2014 that let users earn small amounts of crypto. A feature called BitTask, which paid users in bitcoin or ether for trying products and completing tasks, later became the Storm Play app, launched in February 2017.
The original vision, set out in the Storm token materials, was the "Storm Market," a decentralized marketplace for micro-tasks where "Storm Makers" post tasks and "Storm Players" complete them for STORM tokens. The project later shifted its focus from micro-tasks to crypto cashback on online shopping. Flipster's guide notes a sports sponsorship with the Portland Trail Blazers beginning in 2021, which it describes as the first NBA jersey patch deal for a blockchain company.
On October 7, 2024, StormX decommissioned staking for STMX and its ATH token "to align with the potential merger," according to the company's announcement as relayed by TradingView. Details of that merger have not been documented in sources we could open.
Shopping cashback Users signed up through the StormX app or browser extension and shopped at partner retailers, receiving a percentage of the purchase back in crypto. This follows the affiliate cashback model used by traditional shopping portals, where retailers pay the referring service.
Staking boost Until October 2024, holders could stake STMX to earn additional STMX and increase their cashback rates.
Our own on-chain read of the Ethereum contract (an inference from on-chain data) returns a total supply of 12.5 billion STMX with 18 decimals. Flipster's guide gives the same 12.5 billion figure. Earlier token materials described an allocation of 41.74% crowdsale, 25% company, 23.26% locked and 10% users, as summarized in a Gate Learn article.
StormX is an example of using the affiliate cashback model, which is familiar from traditional shopping portals, to distribute crypto to mainstream consumers. Paying rewards in crypto rather than points was its core idea, and staking tied the token to higher cashback.
STMX is a token, not a blockchain. Compared with related rewards and consumer tokens:
STMX balances and transfers are secured by Ethereum. The rewards themselves depended on StormX as a company: its retailer relationships, its accounts, and its payout systems. With staking decommissioned and the website no longer serving the product, the remaining functions of the token are those of a standard ERC-20.
StormX is a useful case of a consumer crypto rewards business built on affiliate commissions, and of what happens to a token's utility when the company behind it winds down core features. Holders should evaluate STMX based on current, verifiable activity rather than past product descriptions.
STMX is an ERC-20 token and may be available on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum. Exchange support can change for tokens whose products are inactive, so check current listings and the contract address 0xa62cc35625b0c8dc1faea39d33625bb4c15bd71c before trading.
Any Ethereum-compatible wallet can hold STMX, such as MetaMask, Rabby or a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor. Tokens held in a wallet you control do not depend on the StormX app being available.
