Songbird is Flare's canary network, and SGB is its native currency. It is not an independent blockchain competing with Flare, and it is not a testnet either. It is a separate live network, with real tokens and real economic value at stake, that Flare uses to run protocol changes in production conditions before those changes reach Flare Mainnet.
Flare's own documentation describes the progression plainly: a protocol-level change moves from Coston (Songbird's testnet), to the Songbird Canary-Network, then to Coston2 (Flare's testnet), and only then to Flare Mainnet. Songbird sits in the middle of that pipeline, which is exactly why it exists and why it carries a tradable asset rather than a faucet token. A live check in September 2026 returned chain ID 19 from Songbird's public RPC endpoint, with blocks being produced normally.
Official sources:
Songbird was created by the team behind Flare Networks as part of the same program that produced Flare Mainnet. It went live in September 2021 and exited its initial observation period that same month.
SGB was distributed to participants in Flare's XRP snapshot, taken in December 2020. Published material from that period describes an allocation of roughly 0.1511 SGB per eligible XRP, with distribution beginning in January 2022. Because eligibility came from the same snapshot that governed the FLR distribution, much of the SGB holder base originated outside the Flare ecosystem entirely.
Governance of the network runs through Songbird Improvement Proposals and Songbird Test Proposals, published alongside Flare Improvement Proposals. Past SIPs have aligned Songbird's smart contracts with Flare's, calibrated the data attestation layer, moved the network toward broader decentralization, and revised reward structures.
Songbird is EVM compatible and uses the Snowman++ consensus protocol. Published network parameters give block times of roughly 1.8 seconds with single-slot finality once a block reaches consensus, and a proof-of-stake validator set with in-protocol delegation.
The characteristic that separates Flare and Songbird from most EVM chains is that oracle and data-attestation functions are enshrined at the protocol level rather than provided by external services. Flare's documentation states that validators are also data providers for the Flare Time Series Oracle and the Flare Data Connector. Those protocols run natively on Songbird with SGB as the staking and delegation asset.
Because the whole point of the network is early exposure to new code, Songbird deliberately runs software that has not been proven on Flare Mainnet. That is a feature for the ecosystem and a risk for a holder, and both readings are correct at once.
SGB is used for:
SGB is inflationary and has no fixed maximum supply. Published Flare material describes a starting supply of roughly 15 billion SGB with an initial annual inflation rate of 10 percent applied to the inflatable balance, stepping down in subsequent years, with the issued amount funding FTSO delegation rewards and validator or staking rewards. Reward structures and protocol parameters have since been revised through governance, so treat any single percentage as a point-in-time figure and check the current SIPs for what applies now. What is stable is the direction: new SGB is created to pay for network participation, and there is no protocol cap that stops that.
The canary network model is rare. Most projects test on a valueless testnet and discover the difference between test conditions and real incentives only after mainnet deployment. Songbird closes that gap by giving experimental code an environment where participants have something to lose, so economic attacks, liquidation cascades and collateral mechanics get exercised properly. The nearest well-known analogue is Kusama, which plays the same role for Polkadot; Songbird differs in that its testing surface is dominated by oracle and cross-chain attestation protocols rather than parachain and runtime upgrades.
The two networks share an architecture and largely share smart contract code, but they are not interchangeable:
Security comes from the validator set and its staked SGB, the Snowman++ consensus implementation, and the quality of the enshrined protocol code running on top. Because FTSO and FDC are operated by the same participants that produce blocks, the honesty assumptions for consensus and for data feeds overlap more than on a chain using external oracles.
FAssets adds its own model: agents post collateral, a community collateral pool sits behind them, and the system is over-collateralized so redemption remains possible if an agent fails. That model is only as good as its liquidation logic under stress, which is precisely why it is exercised on Songbird first.
Songbird is the part of Flare's design that treats production risk as something to be rehearsed rather than hoped away. For anyone assessing Flare's oracle and cross-chain infrastructure, watching Songbird is usually more informative than reading a roadmap, because upgrades appear there first and their failures are visible. For a holder, the honest framing is that SGB is exposure to that rehearsal function and to Flare's direction, not to an independent Layer 1 story.
SGB is listed on several centralized exchanges, typically against major stablecoins or Bitcoin, with deeper support on venues that already served the Flare distribution. It is also traded on decentralized exchanges native to the Songbird network. Liquidity is thinner than for FLR, so check depth and withdrawal support for chain 19 before committing.
Songbird is EVM compatible, so standard EVM wallets work once you add the network manually using chain ID 19 and a Songbird RPC endpoint. MetaMask and similar wallets handle this well, and hardware wallets such as Ledger can be used through them. Flare's own portal provides interfaces for wrapping SGB, delegating to FTSO providers and participating in governance, which is generally the practical route for a holder who wants to do more than hold. Always confirm you are on Songbird and not Flare before signing, since the two networks share contract layouts and addresses can look familiar.
