Kusama is a public, sharded blockchain that runs essentially the same codebase as Polkadot and acts as its "canary network," a live pre-production environment where new features ship first under real economic conditions. Its relay chain provides shared security to connected parachains, and upgrades and governance are decided on chain. KSM is used for transaction fees, staking, governance and the purchase of coretime. The documentation is blunt about the trade-off: "Kusama is experimental. Expect Chaos."
Official resources:
Kusama was introduced by Gavin Wood, the founder of Polkadot and a co-founder of Ethereum, in a post on the Polkadot Network blog dated 23 August 2019, which called it "an early, unaudited and wholly experimental pre-production trial network." It began as a proof-of-authority chain with validators run by the Web3 Foundation and a Sudo key held by the foundation. A later runtime upgrade removed Sudo, activated nominated proof of stake and switched on transfers and governance. KSM was claimable proportionally by Polkadot token sale participants, and client development has been carried out by Parity Technologies.
The relay chain handles consensus, finality and cross-chain messaging, while parachains execute their own logic in parallel and settle to it, inheriting its security. Consensus is nominated proof of stake: holders who do not run infrastructure nominate validators directly or through nomination pools, sharing rewards and slashing. Blockspace is bought as coretime, paid in KSM. Kusama and Polkadot are separate networks with their own tokens and treasuries, and the Polkadot documentation notes Kusama is "up to four times faster than Polkadot," referring to governance timelines, not block times or throughput, which are identical.
KSM pays transaction fees, is staked by validators and nominators, is used in OpenGov, and buys coretime. Holders vote directly on referenda, delegate voting power, and place the deposits required to submit and decide proposals. Because Kusama upgrades run ahead of Polkadot, KSM holders often vote on runtime changes before those changes reach the larger network.
Most projects that want a proving ground use a testnet with valueless tokens. Kusama is a production network with real value at stake running the same code path as Polkadot, so failure modes appear under genuine economic pressure.
Against Polkadot the difference is tempo and risk tolerance, not technology, since the codebase is shared. Against general-purpose smart contract chains, Kusama hosts application-specific parachains that borrow its validator set rather than contracts in a shared runtime. Against frameworks such as Cosmos, it pools security at the relay chain instead of leaving each chain to secure itself.
Validators bond KSM and are slashed for equivocation or unavailability, and nominators share those penalties, which aligns passive holders with validator behavior. Parachains rely on relay chain validators to verify their state transitions. Protocol changes are enacted by referendum, and since Sudo was removed there is no central kill switch.
Kusama's main risk is the one it advertises. Code lands here first, sometimes unaudited, and runtime upgrades can change behavior quickly. Faster governance means a referendum can pass and enact in a shorter window than most holders monitor. Staking carries slashing risk and unbonding periods during which funds are illiquid.
Kusama is one of the few genuinely adversarial staging environments that is also a real network, so features surviving it have survived users motivated to break them, and it absorbs failures that would otherwise land on Polkadot.
KSM trades on many centralized exchanges and on decentralized venues in the Kusama ecosystem, including Asset Hub and DEXs on connected parachains. Availability, pairs and fees vary by venue and jurisdiction.
KSM is held in accounts on the Kusama chain, which also hold Asset Hub assets. Common choices are the Polkadot-JS extension, SubWallet, Nova Wallet and Talisman, which support staking and governance directly, with Ledger for cold storage. KSM left on an exchange cannot nominate or vote.
