QuarkChain is a long-running blockchain project that began in 2017 as a sharded Layer 1 and has since added a second, very different network: a customized OP Stack rollup on Ethereum that the team calls the Super World Computer. QKC is the native token of the original sharded network and the asset associated with the newer rollup.
The question most people actually want answered is whether anything is still being built here, because the project dates from the 2018 cycle and many of its contemporaries are gone. The answer, verified rather than assumed, is yes. On September 11, 2026 the original QuarkChain mainnet shard zero, EVM chain ID 100001, returned a block produced within the same minute the check ran. The Super World Computer mainnet, EVM chain ID 100011, did the same. The project's public repositories received commits on that same day. Both networks are live and development is ongoing.
Official sources:
QuarkChain was founded by Dr. Qi Zhou, a software engineer whose background includes work at Google and Facebook. Research began in 2017 around the problem of blockchain scalability, a whitepaper followed, and the token sale concluded in June 2018, reported at the time as raising roughly 20 million dollars in ETH.
Mainnet dates are reported inconsistently across secondary sources, with some placing the first mainnet in late 2018 and others in the first half of 2019, followed by upgrades that introduced multi-native-token support. Rather than pick a date that cannot be verified from primary material, it is more useful to note what can be checked: the sharded mainnet has been producing blocks continuously and was still doing so when this page was researched.
The more consequential development is the strategic shift. The heterogeneous sharding thesis that defined QuarkChain in 2018 is no longer the team's primary focus. Current documentation is built almost entirely around the Super World Computer, and public repository activity is concentrated on rollup, storage, and execution components rather than on the original sharding design. A migration bridge between the two environments is published in the documentation.
The original sharded architecture The legacy network uses two layers. Shards process transactions in parallel, each maintaining its own state, while a root chain confirms shard blocks and provides a shared ordering. Cross-shard transactions move value between shards through this root layer. The design also allowed shards to use different consensus and token parameters, which is where the "heterogeneous" description came from.
The Super World Computer rollup The newer network is a customized OP Stack rollup settling to Ethereum. Its documentation identifies the gaps it is built to address: high validation cost, storage capacity limits that cap a rollup at a few terabytes, sequential EVM execution, the cost of onboarding users who must first acquire a gas token, and reliance on centralized frontends.
Soul Gas Token The rollup's answer to the onboarding problem is a non-transferable gas token. It can be airdropped to new users and spent only on transaction fees, so recipients can transact without first buying anything and without creating immediate sell pressure on the tradable asset.
Long-term storage and web3 addressing Related components include an L2 blob mechanism for cheap data, an inbox contract, L1 header hash history for verifying Ethereum state from inside the rollup, and a web3 URL gateway that serves web content directly from chain storage rather than from a centralized server.
QKC is used for:
Supply is worth stating precisely, because the ERC-20 is where the tradable float lives. A direct read of the Ethereum contract at 0xea26c4ac16d4a5a106820bc8aee85fd0b7b2b664 returns the name "QuarkChain Token", the symbol QKC, 18 decimals, and a total supply of exactly 10,000,000,000 tokens. Inspecting the deployed bytecode shows no mint function and no burn function of any kind, so that figure cannot mechanically rise or fall. The contract does expose an owner address and pause controls, and the paused flag read as false when checked, which means transfers are enabled but a privileged address retains the ability to halt them. That is a governance and trust consideration rather than a supply one, and it is the kind of detail worth knowing before assuming a token is fully immutable. A separate representation also exists on the Energi network.
Two things stand out. The first is longevity with continuity of leadership: this is one of a small number of 2018-era Layer 1 projects whose founding engineer is still publicly driving the technical direction, and whose original network never stopped producing blocks. The second is the storage thesis. Most rollup teams optimize execution and treat data availability as a cost line, while QuarkChain's newer work treats permanent, verifiable, cheap on-chain storage as the missing primitive and builds addressing and content serving on top of it. Whether or not that bet pays off, it is a genuinely different emphasis from the rest of the rollup field.
The cost of running two live networks with one team is real, and it is the fair criticism to weigh against the breadth.
The original network secures its root chain through mining, with shard security derived from the root chain's work and from staked value. That model has been running for years without a publicly known consensus failure. The Super World Computer inherits Ethereum's settlement guarantees in the manner of an OP Stack rollup, meaning correctness ultimately depends on the fault proof and settlement path to Ethereum L1, as well as on sequencer operation in the interim. The project publishes audit reports in a dedicated public repository.
QuarkChain is a rare example of a 2018 scaling project that neither shut down nor coasted. It shipped a sharded network, kept it alive, concluded that the approach was not the future, and built something architecturally different on Ethereum instead. For anyone studying how long-horizon infrastructure projects actually evolve, that arc is more instructive than the pitch deck ever was.
QKC is listed on centralized exchanges, most commonly as the Ethereum ERC-20. Availability and trading pairs vary by venue and jurisdiction.
QKC is often available on:
Common pairs include QKC quoted against USDT and other major assets where supported.
QKC can be held:
Confirm the network before depositing or withdrawing. The Ethereum ERC-20, the native asset on the sharded mainnet, and the rollup representation are distinct, and the documented migration bridge is the intended route between environments.
