Powerledger is an energy technology company that builds software for tracking, tracing and trading renewable energy and environmental commodities. Its products let utilities, retailers, corporate buyers and building operators record where electricity came from, settle peer to peer trades between neighbors, and buy and retire renewable energy certificates.
POWR is the company's token. It has always functioned less like a network gas token and more like an access instrument: businesses that want to run Powerledger's platforms hold POWR as the licensing layer of the commercial model.
Two facts are important for anyone reading older material about this project. First, Powerledger is still an operating company with live deployments, not a dormant 2017 era token. Second, it no longer runs a blockchain of its own. The Powerledger chain, a Solana derived network the company operated for several years, has been deprecated, and the platforms now settle on Solana mainnet. Descriptions that still mention "the Powerledger blockchain" or staking on it are out of date.
Official sources:
Powerledger was founded in Perth, Australia in 2016 by a team including Dr. Jemma Green and John Bulich, with a thesis that rooftop solar and distributed generation would need software to settle energy between participants rather than only through a central utility. The company raised through a token sale in 2017, one of the larger Australian offerings of that cycle, and POWR was issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
The company later established a presence in Zug, Switzerland and has run projects across more than ten countries, including deployments in Australia, India, Austria, Thailand and the United States. Over time it moved away from operating its own chain, deprecating the Powerledger blockchain and expanding onto Solana mainnet in late 2024, with native multichain POWR transfers between Ethereum and Solana enabled through Wormhole's Native Token Transfers standard in February 2025.
Metering data comes in from the physical world Smart meters, inverters and generation assets report production and consumption. Powerledger's software ingests that data as the factual basis for everything downstream.
Software allocates and settles Depending on the product, the platform either allocates generation among participants in a building or microgrid, matches buyers and sellers in a peer to peer arrangement, or records the creation and transfer of certificates representing a megawatt hour of renewable output.
Blockchain provides the record The public ledger supplies an auditable trail of who created, held and retired which certificate or trade. Powerledger's own framing is deliberately unromantic about this: the chain is enabling infrastructure, comparable to barcodes in a supermarket, rather than the product itself.
Settlement happens in conventional currency Energy and certificates are priced and paid in local money through existing rails. The token layer sits alongside that, not in place of it.
The Ethereum contract reports exactly 1,000,000,000 POWR issued at six decimals, matching the fixed cap set at launch. No further minting has occurred.
Documented and historical roles for POWR include:
The original 2017 design also described a second unit, Sparkz, intended as a locally denominated token for retail energy transactions inside individual markets. Sparkz does not feature prominently in current Powerledger materials, and readers should treat the two token model as part of the project's history rather than a description of how the platforms operate today.
Energy Web took the opposite path and built a dedicated chain and identity stack for energy sector participants, positioning itself as shared infrastructure that utilities join. IoTeX and similar decentralized physical infrastructure networks focus on connecting devices and rewarding data contribution, with energy as one vertical among several. VeChain and OriginTrail address supply chain provenance generally rather than electricity specifically.
Powerledger's distinguishing feature is how much of the value sits in commercial software and market access rather than in the token. That makes the business more legible than most crypto projects and, at the same time, makes the link between company success and token demand less direct.
Since the migration, on chain records inherit Solana's proof of stake consensus and validator security, while POWR on Ethereum inherits Ethereum's. Cross chain movement uses Wormhole Native Token Transfers, which keeps a single canonical asset rather than creating a separate wrapped version, but does introduce bridge and messaging layer risk.
The application layer is different in kind. TraceX, xGrid and Transactive are proprietary enterprise software with commercial controls, counterparty verification and market compliance obligations. Their security is a matter of conventional software and regulatory assurance rather than public code review.
Powerledger is one of the few 2017 vintage utility token projects that turned into a durable operating company. Its recent record is concrete: certificate support extended to new markets in 2025, a lightweight peer to peer trading product released in 2026, and continued deployments across multiple countries. For anyone assessing whether blockchain has produced usable infrastructure outside finance, energy certificate tracking is one of the more credible answers, and Powerledger is one of the longer running attempts at it.
POWR trades on centralized exchanges and, since the Solana expansion, on Solana decentralized exchanges including Raydium and Jupiter. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction and platform.
POWR has been available on venues including:
Because POWR exists on more than one network, confirm which chain a listing settles on before depositing or withdrawing.
After purchase, POWR can be held:
Staking on the retired Powerledger blockchain is no longer available, so treat any offer of native POWR staking with caution. Always verify the contract or mint address for the network you are using.
