NULS is an open-source blockchain project, active since 2017, built around the idea of modular chains: instead of offering one fixed network, it provides components that communities and businesses can assemble into their own blockchains. NULS is the native token of the NULS main chain, where it pays fees and is locked as a deposit to run or back consensus nodes. The project's own summary is blunt: "NULS is not a chain. It is a way to make chains."
NULS combines a public main chain with a toolkit for launching customized chains. The main chain runs NULS 2.0, a modular node implementation written in Java, and uses a consensus design called Proof of Credit (POC). Around it sit developer tools such as ChainBox for building new chains, an EVM-compatible network called ENULS, and staking products that let projects raise support from NULS holders.
The current NULS website focuses on NULS Mars, a testnet and implementation workspace that experiments with zero-knowledge privacy, post-quantum cryptography, multiple virtual machines and an AI-oriented proof-of-work model.
The NULS website describes it as an "open protocol since 2017". The project's developer documentation describes a community-driven model in which a core team works with the NULS Technical Community, and says that community had more than 200 developers when the page was written. The names of individual founders are not given in the official sources reviewed for this page.
Development moved from an original NULS 1.x codebase (archived on GitHub) to the modular NULS 2.0 architecture, whose design goal was to let modules run independently behind standard interfaces so developers in any language could contribute components.
NULS 2.0 nodes are built from separate modules (network, blocks, transactions, consensus, accounts and others) that communicate through defined interfaces. The consensus module on the main chain uses Proof of Credit:
Joining consensus A node operator locks a margin of NULS and must meet a minimum credit standard. Deposits above the minimum are allowed, and the deposit size is linked to rewards.
Credit scoring Every account has a credit value between -1 and 1, calculated from a capacity factor (historical blocks produced) and a responsibility factor (violations and correct block production).
Penalties Occasional failures, such as a node going offline during its turn, trigger a "yellow card" that lowers credit. Serious misbehavior such as double-signing or attempts to fork the chain triggers a "red card": the margin is locked for two months and the node's credit can no longer reach the consensus threshold.
Rewards Consensus rewards are paid in NULS based on node deposits and credit.
The NULS docs describe POC as inheriting the efficiency of delegated proof of stake while adding credit-based accountability.
A current, official supply and inflation schedule could not be confirmed from an official page that loaded for this article, so readers should check the NULS explorer or GitHub for up-to-date figures.
NULS treats a blockchain as a set of interchangeable parts. The credit-scored consensus model, where reliability is tracked over time rather than judged by stake alone, is also distinctive. The POCM model, which lets new projects bootstrap funding from NULS staking rewards, is another feature not common among older layer-1 networks.
Main chain security comes from Proof of Credit: operators put NULS at risk as a margin, credit scores track reliability, and red-card penalties lock deposits for misbehavior. Node software is open source. Mars-era features such as AIPOW are explicitly described by the project as experimental and not a production claim.
NULS is one of the longer-running projects exploring modular, customizable chains, an idea that later became central to the wider industry. Its credit-scored consensus and its current post-quantum and multi-VM experiments make it a useful case study, even if its adoption is modest.
NULS trades on centralized and/or decentralized venues. Specific exchange listings were not verified for this page, so check the exchange directly and confirm which network (NULS main chain or a wrapped version on another chain) it supports for deposits and withdrawals.
NULS can be held in the official NULS web or node wallets published on the NULS GitHub, and the NULS developer docs include guidance for integrating the Nabox wallet. A Ledger application for NULS 2.0 is also published in the project's repositories. Keep recovery phrases offline and make sure you are using the correct network before sending funds.
