MonaCoin is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency and peer-to-peer payment network that its project site calls "the first Japanese cryptocurrency". It began as a fork of Litecoin's codebase, has no premine, and takes its name and mascot from Mona (モナー), a well-known Japanese ASCII art character. MONA matters as one of the oldest community-run coins still maintained today, and as a coin that built a real grassroots following in Japan around tipping, small payments and online culture.
MonaCoin was created by a pseudonymous developer referred to as Mr. Watanabe, and the rest of the early team was also anonymous. The official site dates the project to December 2013, and its genesis is commonly dated 1 January 2014. It was launched without a premine.
Over time the project has tracked upgrades from Bitcoin and Litecoin. Its mining algorithm moved from Scrypt to Lyra2RE and then Lyra2REv2, a change widely described as a response to Scrypt ASIC miners. It also adopted Segregated Witness (SegWit) through a soft fork. The official site stresses that "the Monacoin Project does not issue or operate coins" and that developers have no special access to coins. The most recent full-node release on GitHub is v0.20.4, published in October 2024.

It is also one of the few 2013/2014-era Litecoin forks still receiving maintenance releases.
Compared with Litecoin, MonaCoin has faster 1.5-minute blocks, per-block difficulty adjustment and a different hashing algorithm, which kept mining open to GPUs for longer. Compared with Dogecoin, another community coin born from internet culture, MonaCoin has a fixed maximum supply rather than ongoing fixed issuance. Unlike newer chains, it has no native smart contracts.
MonaCoin relies on proof-of-work: rewriting its history requires controlling a majority of the network's hash rate. Dark Gravity Wave v3 adjusts difficulty every block to smooth sudden changes in mining power. As a smaller proof-of-work coin, MonaCoin has less total hash rate than large networks, which in general makes such coins more exposed to majority-hash attacks.
