Hydration is a Substrate-based decentralized finance chain in the Polkadot ecosystem whose defining feature is the Omnipool, a single trading pool holding every listed asset instead of splitting liquidity across token pairs. Around it sit a money market, an over-collateralized stablecoin called HOLLAR, and an embedded Ethereum Virtual Machine. HDX is the native token, used for governance and staking and bought back with a share of revenue. The project ran as HydraDX until a 2024 referendum approved the rename.
Official resources:
Hydration began as HydraDX, co-founded by Jakub Gregus and Jakub Panik, its chief technology officer, with development by the Galactic Council. Most of the project's history ran through on-chain governance: a crowdloan secured a parachain slot, the Omnipool launched, and referendum 126 in 2024 approved the money market, HOLLAR and the rebrand. Governance also cut maximum supply to 6.5 billion HDX.
In a conventional automated market maker each pair has its own pool, so liquidity is scattered. The Omnipool instead pairs every listed asset against a hub asset, called H2O in current documentation, and routes all trades through it. Any listed token can therefore swap for any other in one transaction, and providers can deposit a single asset rather than a balanced pair.
The money market is based on the Aave v3 codebase. Users supply collateral such as DOT, ETH, USDT and WBTC, borrow against it, or mint HOLLAR at asset-specific loan-to-value ratios, with liquidations executed partially at each block. An EVM in the runtime lets Solidity contracts reach the Omnipool directly.
Holding HDX confers a vote in the Hydration DAO on listings, parameters, treasury spending and protocol-owned liquidity. Staking mints GIGAHDX, which pays no separate reward token but becomes redeemable for more HDX over time as protocol revenue flows in, funded by trading, borrowing, liquidation and stablecoin fees rather than inflation. The documentation states that 50 percent of asset fees go into HDX buybacks.
The Omnipool is a genuinely different AMM design rather than a parameter tweak, and single-sided liquidity removes a real barrier for depositors. The deeper distinction is integration: trading, lending, stablecoin issuance and an EVM share one runtime and state.
Against Curve and other Ethereum AMMs, Hydration is its own chain where the AMM is part of the runtime, which is what allows protocol-level circuit breakers. Against Osmosis, it concentrates all assets into one pool rather than many behind a router. Against Polkadot, HDX is a claim on one application chain, not a base-layer asset.
Beyond consensus, the protocol leans on documented risk controls. Each asset has a value locked cap set lower for riskier assets, oracles monitor prices, withdrawal fees scale with the spot-to-oracle price gap, operations pause if that spread exceeds 1 percent, and no more than half an asset's liquidity is tradeable per block. Runtime Verification audited the Omnipool pallet in September 2022, BlockScience ran an economic audit in March 2022, and a bug bounty runs on Immunefi.
Concentrating every asset in one pool concentrates risk as well as liquidity, which is why the caps and circuit breakers exist. The money market and stablecoin add lending, oracle and liquidation risk, and HOLLAR is over-collateralized rather than fiat-backed, so its peg depends on collateral quality under stress. Single-sided liquidity reallocates impermanent loss, it does not remove it.
Hydration is the main liquidity venue in the Polkadot ecosystem and one of the few places where trading, lending and a stablecoin run inside a single runtime rather than as separate contracts, decided largely by referendum.
HDX is available on several centralized exchanges and trades natively in Hydration's own Omnipool, where the deepest on-chain liquidity sits. Buying there requires a Polkadot-compatible wallet, and it is worth confirming the official domain since DeFi front ends are a phishing target.
HDX is a Substrate-native asset held in wallets such as Talisman, SubWallet, Nova Wallet or the Polkadot.js extension, and can be secured with a Ledger device. Staking and voting require self custody, so tokens left on an exchange cannot participate.
