ether.fi is a non-custodial Ethereum staking and restaking protocol that has grown into a broader consumer finance app. Its core product issues eETH, a rebasing liquid restaking token natively restaked into EigenLayer, and weETH, the non-rebasing wrapped version used across decentralized finance. Liquid vaults, the Cash card and Borrow sit around it, and ETHFI is the governance token.
Official resources:
ether.fi's documentation lists Mike Silagadze as founder and chief executive and Rok Kopp, widely reported as co-founder, as chief customer officer. Silagadze previously founded the education technology company Top Hat. The ETHFI governance token was distributed in March 2024 through a Binance Launchpool program, with trading beginning on March 18, 2024.
A user deposits ETH and receives eETH, a rebasing ERC-20 whose balance grows as rewards accrue, from base Ethereum staking and from restaking emissions that the protocol aggregates weekly and converts to ETH. weETH is the wrapped, non-rebasing form that lending markets and automated market makers integrate.
Restaking is native rather than layered: validators themselves are restaked at the protocol level, which documentation says avoids the unstaking delays of the wrapped approach. Node operators run the validators using distributed validator technology, so no single operator holds a complete key.
ETHFI is primarily a governance asset. Documentation describes holders directing the grants program, protocol parameters such as fees and upgrades, approval of node operators, and treasury diversification, with the ether.fi Foundation implementing those decisions. It is not the yield-bearing asset: staking and restaking rewards accrue to eETH and weETH holders instead.
Two things stand out. The custody model was designed so the depositor, not the node operator, controls validator keys, which addresses the main structural criticism of delegated staking. The second is the product ladder, since the same collateral feeds vaults, a borrowing market and a card, letting users spend against staked ETH without selling.
Lido and Rocket Pool issue liquid staking tokens tied to consensus rewards only, while ether.fi restakes natively, so its token carries restaking exposure and the added risk. Renzo shares that premise, but native restaking at the validator level differs from designs that deposit an existing liquid staking token into EigenLayer, which ether.fi supplies rather than competes with.
Holders stake ETH for liquid exposure to staking and restaking rewards while keeping the token usable as collateral elsewhere. weETH is widely integrated, so it can be supplied to lending markets or paired in liquidity pools. Liquid offers managed exposure from one deposit, and Cash and Borrow give spending power without a sale.
Contracts have been reviewed by nine independent firms, including Certora, CertiK, Halborn, Nethermind, Zellic, Paladin, Decurity, Omniscia and Solidified. Documentation states staking contracts have been audited continuously since 2023, with a new review for each major release. A public bug bounty runs on Immunefi, and the protocol publishes signer details and past incident write-ups.
Restaking adds risk on top of staking. Validators can be slashed for consensus faults, and restaked collateral can face additional slashing conditions set by the services it secures. Liquid restaking tokens can trade below the value of the underlying ETH during stress, and redemption speed depends on protocol liquidity. Vaults are managed by external strategists, and Cash and Borrow add liquidation risk.
Ethereum staking concentrated quickly around a small number of providers, and the custody question sat unresolved beneath that growth. Keeping keys with the depositor while paying operators to run the machines is a serious attempt to make delegated staking non-custodial in practice.
ETHFI is listed on major centralized exchanges including Binance, OKX, Kraken, Bybit, Upbit, Gate, MEXC and WhiteBIT. As an ERC-20 token it also trades on Ethereum decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap, and it is deployed on Arbitrum, Base and Scroll. Confirm the contract address against official documentation first.
ETHFI works in any Ethereum-compatible wallet, including hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor. If you hold eETH or weETH instead, note that eETH rebases while weETH does not, which matters for integrations assuming a fixed balance. Assets in Liquid vaults or used as Cash collateral sit in protocol contracts and carry contract risk.
