Theta Fuel is the operational token of the Theta Network, which Theta Labs describes as a decentralized cloud for AI, media and entertainment. Theta uses a dual token design: THETA is the governance and staking asset, and TFUEL is the gas token that pays for work. The documentation states TFUEL covers payments to edge nodes for AI computation, video transcoding and 3D rendering, plus smart contract activity. THETA decides who validates, TFUEL pays for what the network does.
Official resources:
TFUEL was not founded separately. It is a native asset of the Theta blockchain, built by Theta Labs, which was co-founded by Mitch Liu and Jieyi Long. TFUEL came into existence at the Theta mainnet launch in March 2019, and its role has been reshaped since: Mainnet 2.0 in May 2020 added Guardian Nodes and the edge relay stack, Mainnet 3.0 in June 2021 added TFUEL staking and burning, and Mainnet 4.0 in December 2022 introduced the Metachain. EdgeCloud launched in May 2024.
Theta runs a multi level Byzantine fault tolerant consensus. Roughly 20 to 30 Enterprise Validator Nodes finalize blocks, and thousands of community run Guardian Nodes seal them as a check. The documentation names Google, Samsung, Sony Europe, Binance and Creative Artists Agency among those validators.
TFUEL is the unit of account above that layer. Every transfer and contract call consumes it, and Edge Nodes earn it for contributing CPU, GPU and bandwidth. Theta is EVM compatible and ships an adaptor translating its endpoints into the Ethereum RPC API, so standard tooling works.
TFUEL pays gas for transfers and contract calls, and pays edge nodes for compute, transcoding, relaying and rendering. It can be staked to an Elite Edge Node, with a documented minimum of 10,000 and maximum of 500,000 TFUEL per node, roughly a 60 hour unstaking period, and withdrawal only to the wallet that staked.
Its fourth role is deflationary. The documentation records 5 billion TFUEL at genesis, with supply rising annually at a fixed rate. Against that, Mainnet 3.0 introduced burning of transaction and contract fees, and Elite Edge Nodes burn part of each payment received, so net supply change depends on usage.
Most gas tokens only buy block space. TFUEL buys block space and physical work performed off chain on other people's hardware, tying demand to GPU and bandwidth use rather than transaction count. The staking design is also unusual: TFUEL is staked to the machines doing the work, not to validators.
Render and Akash Network run marketplaces matching GPU buyers with suppliers. Theta pairs its compute market with a chain it controls end to end and a validator council of large media and technology firms. Livepeer focuses on video transcoding alone, where Theta spans video, AI inference, training and rendering.
TFUEL inherits the security of the Theta blockchain, where blocks are finalized by the enterprise validator committee then sealed by thousands of Guardian Nodes. Staking is denominated in THETA for validators and Guardians and in TFUEL for Elite Edge Nodes, and withdrawal restrictions limit the damage from a compromised session.
The validator committee is small and made up of named corporations, a deliberate choice that also concentrates block production in a few identified entities. TFUEL is inflationary at the protocol level and only turns net deflationary if burn from usage exceeds issuance, so supply behavior depends on real demand. Several capacity figures in the documentation are self reported.
Theta is one of the longer running attempts to build a real business on top of a blockchain rather than beside one, and TFUEL is the meter on that business. If the edge network genuinely sells compute, usage becomes measurable rather than speculative.
TFUEL trades on a broad set of centralized exchanges and has been listed for years, so pair availability is good. Because it is native to the Theta blockchain rather than an ERC-20, confirm the venue supports withdrawal to a Theta address.
Theta publishes an official wallet as a web app and as iOS and Android apps, covering THETA, TFUEL and staking. Because Theta supports the Ethereum RPC API, MetaMask can also be pointed at the Theta mainnet. For larger balances, control the seed phrase yourself.
