Elastos is a long-running blockchain project that pairs a Bitcoin merge-mined main chain with a set of sidechains, a decentralized identity system, and an application runtime. Its stated goal is a "world computer" in which users hold their own identity, data, and compute rather than renting them from cloud platforms.
ELA is the native asset of the main chain. It pays fees, funds the treasury, is bonded by validators, and carries votes in the project's on-chain governance body.
The thing to understand up front is that Elastos is not a single chain. The main chain is deliberately minimal and handles settlement and consensus, smart contracts live on the Elastos Smart Chain (ESC), identity records live on the identity sidechain (EID), and the consumer-facing software layer is a separate stack.
Official sources:
Elastos was founded in 2017 by Rong Chen and Feng Han. Rong Chen previously worked at Microsoft on operating system research and had pursued a network operating system concept for years before the project took a blockchain form. Feng Han drove much of the early public presence.
Development has been coordinated through the Elastos Foundation and, more recently, through an on-chain treasury and an elected council. The original branding used the name Cyber Republic for its governance arm; that body is now the Elastos DAO. The project has repositioned several times, most notably from a general "smart web" narrative toward Bitcoin-anchored infrastructure and, from 2026, a consumer product line branded elastOS.
Elastos consensus is layered rather than singular:
Auxiliary Proof of Work (AuxPoW) The main chain is merge-mined with Bitcoin using SHA-256, so Bitcoin miners can submit work that counts for both chains without spending extra energy. Project materials describe a substantial share of Bitcoin hashrate participating, though the exact share moves with pool policy and should be read as a changing figure rather than a fixed property.
Bonded Proof of Stake (BPoS) Merge mining alone gives probabilistic ordering, so Elastos layers a bonded validator set on top for faster finality. Validators post an ELA bond, and holders can stake toward them.
Elastos DAO ELA holders elect council members who steward proposals and treasury spending. Governance is a genuine consensus tier rather than a bolt-on, because a fixed share of every block reward flows to the treasury it controls.
Project documentation describes block rewards split three ways, commonly published as 35 percent to AuxPoW miners, 35 percent to BPoS validators, and 30 percent to the DAO treasury. Check current documentation for live parameters, since governance can revise them.
Both networks were live when this page was checked on September 11, 2026. A direct read of the public main chain RPC returned a block height above 2.29 million with connected peers, and the Elastos Smart Chain RPC returned chain ID 20 with a block height above 37.8 million.
ELA is used for:
Supply is capped. Public project material states a maximum of roughly 28.22 million ELA on a four-year halving cycle, with issuance running out well into the next century. This is a real protocol cap rather than an informal target, and it is materially smaller than most Layer 1 supplies.
Elastos borrows Bitcoin's proof-of-work security instead of bootstrapping its own, then adds a bonded validator layer for finality and an elected treasury for funding. Few projects run all three tiers at once.
Compared with other Bitcoin-adjacent networks:
Against general-purpose Layer 1s the trade is clear. Elastos gives up single-chain composability and ecosystem size in exchange for inherited hashpower, a small hard-capped supply, and a treasury that does not depend on a foundation's discretion.
Security rests on several independent legs:
Yes, but the code moved, which is easy to misread as abandonment. As of September 2026 the github.com/elastos organization hosts only a small number of public repositories, several untouched since 2022 or 2023, and the historical main chain repository is no longer published under it.
Active development has shifted to the elastOS effort led by Elacity Labs. Its runtime repository was updated the same week this page was written, and the project published an elastOS "World Computer V1" launch in February 2026 followed by development updates through mid-2026. The chains are live and producing blocks, verified directly against the public RPC endpoints. The fair summary is that the networks run and product work is active, but the public repository footprint is fragmented across organizations, which makes independent verification harder than it should be.
Elastos is one of very few projects continuously merge-mined with Bitcoin since 2017 while also maintaining a hard supply cap and an elected, on-chain-funded treasury. That combination is uncommon, and the current elastOS work is a concrete attempt to turn long-standing architecture into something an end user can actually run.
ELA trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized venues on the Elastos Smart Chain. Listings, pairs, and regional availability change, so confirm on the venue itself before trading.
ELA has historically been available on venues including:
ELA can be held:
Main chain ELA and ESC-bridged ELA are not the same balance. Sending one to an address format meant for the other is a common and often unrecoverable mistake. Verify the chain before every transfer.
