BOB, short for Build on Bitcoin, is an EVM-compatible Layer 2 network that describes itself as a hybrid chain sitting between Bitcoin and Ethereum. In practice it is an OP Stack chain that settles to Ethereum and has been upgraded to a hybrid zero-knowledge rollup using Kailua, with a set of Bitcoin-facing components layered on top. Its chain ID is 60808, which can be confirmed against the public RPC endpoint.
Because the branding leans heavily on Bitcoin, it is worth being precise about what BOB does and does not inherit. BOB's state correctness and its users' ability to exit are anchored in Ethereum through OP Stack bridge contracts and proof-based dispute resolution. Bitcoin's role is different: it contributes economic finality through staked BTC, a trust-minimized bridge design based on BitVM, a light client that lets BOB contracts read Bitcoin state, and a censorship-resistant fallback for data availability. Bitcoin miners do not validate BOB blocks, and BOB does not inherit Bitcoin's proof of work for state validity.
Official sources:
BOB emerged from teams working on Bitcoin-adjacent smart contract infrastructure and launched its mainnet as an OP Stack rollup before broadening into the hybrid design it describes today. Rather than attributing the project to a single founder, the documentation presents it as a foundation-backed effort with a large partner set, including co-authorship of the BitVM2 bridge design paper and membership of an industry working group formed to push BitVM toward production.
The token arrived later than the chain. A community sale ran in November 2025, and the token generation event and airdrop took place on 20 November 2025, with an allocation set aside for community members who had used the network beforehand.
An OP Stack rollup settling to Ethereum BOB uses the OP Stack's native bridge contracts, so deposits and withdrawals happen through Ethereum smart contracts and users can force a withdrawal directly on Ethereum even if the sequencer stops producing blocks.
Hybrid zero-knowledge consensus via Kailua A proposer posts state updates that can be challenged like an optimistic rollup, but disputes are resolved with a single validity proof rather than a multi-round interactive game. The documentation describes fault proof participation with modest collateral and SNARK verification on Ethereum, with a withdrawal window measured in days and an intent to shorten it as the system matures.
Data availability on Ethereum with a Bitcoin fallback Transaction data is posted to Ethereum blobs as the primary store, with Bitcoin available as a censorship-resistant fallback path.
Bitcoin-facing components A Bitcoin light client and relay let contracts on BOB verify Bitcoin state. BOB Gateway provides intent-based onboarding so a user can move BTC into a position in a single action. A BitVM bridge aims to replace custodial or honest-majority BTC bridges with a 1-of-n design where a single honest participant can prevent theft.
The BOB token is an ERC-20 asset and is explicitly not the network's gas token; gas on BOB is paid in ETH. Its documented roles are protocol rewards, liquidity incentives, gas subsidies, ecosystem alignment, staking for economic security, and governance. Holders can stake and delegate to Hybrid Nodes, and the documentation states that locked tokens cannot be staked so that rewards flow to circulating participants rather than to insiders on a vesting schedule.
The token is deployed on three networks and moved between them using Chainlink CCIP, with an asymmetric model: tokens are locked and released on BOB Mainnet, and burned and minted on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.
On supply, the project documents a fixed maximum of 10 billion tokens, allocated across ecosystem and community, early backers, core contributors, foundation, initial claims and staking bonuses, and a community sale, with most of the supply subject to multi-year vesting. It is worth being accurate about how that cap is enforced. Reading the deployed token implementation shows a role-based ERC-20 with mint and burn functions gated by minter and burner roles, an upgradeable proxy pattern, and no cap() function of the kind some capped tokens expose. The documentation itself says total supply is governance-controlled and can change through issuance decisions. In other words, 10 billion is a governance commitment rather than a limit the contract refuses to exceed.
The security picture has several separate layers, and conflating them is the most common mistake made about this network.
State validity and exit rights come from Ethereum. BOB is an OP Stack chain whose proposals are resolved on Ethereum through Kailua's validity-proof dispute mechanism, and users can force withdrawals through Ethereum contracts if the sequencer misbehaves.
Economic finality is where Bitcoin enters. BOB integrated Babylon's Bitcoin staking so that staked BTC and finality providers back the chain's finality, making it what Babylon calls a Bitcoin Secured Network. That is an economic and slashing-based guarantee, not Bitcoin consensus validating BOB's state transitions.
Bridge security for BTC is the BitVM component. The design allows anyone to challenge a fraudulent withdrawal, so deposits are safe as long as one honest participant is online. At the time of writing the project's own documentation describes this bridge as running on testnet with a mainnet target, so check the current status in the BitVM section of the docs rather than assume it is live.
Finally, privileged roles remain. The documentation lists an L1 Proxy Admin and an L2 Proxy Admin that can upgrade most system contracts, a System Config Owner, a batcher and a proposer. Both proxy admins are documented as 4-of-6 multisigs, and a compromise of those keys could upgrade contracts to malicious versions or lock assets in the standard bridge.
Bitcoin holds an enormous amount of idle capital and very little native programmability. BOB is one of the more technically serious attempts to close that gap, and its documentation is unusually candid about trust assumptions and privileged roles. For anyone trying to understand what Bitcoin DeFi actually requires, including light clients, trust-minimized bridges and a credible exit path, it is a useful reference implementation.
BOB trades on several centralized exchanges following its November 2025 token generation event, and on decentralized venues across the networks where the token is deployed. Because the token exists on BOB Mainnet, Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, confirm which chain a listing refers to before withdrawing.
You can review listings and market context on the BOB (Build on Bitcoin) page on CoinRithm.
Spot trading opened on several international exchanges at the token generation event, and coverage has expanded since. Deposit or withdrawal support may exist on only one of the three deployment networks at a given exchange, so check the network selector before moving funds.
Gas on BOB is paid in ETH, so an otherwise funded wallet still needs a small ETH balance to transact.
