Canton is a public blockchain network for regulated financial institutions, where privacy is a protocol property rather than an add-on. It is a network of interoperable ledgers joined by shared synchronization infrastructure. Canton Coin (CC) is the native payment and incentive token of the Global Synchronizer, the decentralized layer that lets Canton applications transact atomically. Both were built by Digital Asset.
Official resources:
Digital Asset, the enterprise blockchain company founded in 2014, created Daml and Canton. A test network went live in 2023 and the Global Synchronizer's main network launched in 2024. Governance is facilitated by the Global Synchronizer Foundation, an independent body managed by the Linux Foundation, and the code is published as the open source Splice project.
Applications run on participant nodes. Each node holds only the data for transactions its own parties are involved in, so no operator reads a global ledger. Parties connected to a common synchronizer can transact. The Global Synchronizer is run by independent entities called Super Validators, who validate CC transfers under a two-thirds Byzantine fault tolerant consensus. CC positions and transfers are deliberately public while other assets stay private, and a public CC transfer can be composed atomically with private sub-transactions without exposing them.
Canton Coin is an optional payment mechanism. Node operators can prepay transaction traffic with CC or arrange it through a third party in fiat. Fees are denominated in US dollars and settled in CC at an on-chain rate published by the Super Validator oracle each minting cycle.
Supply follows a burn and mint design. Fees are burned by the submitting user rather than paid to a provider, while infrastructure and application providers mint new coins for the utility they supply. The whitepaper sets a curve of 100 billion coins over ten years, split evenly between infrastructure and applications, then 2.5 billion per year. Supply contracts when usage exceeds minting and expands when it does not.
Privacy is per-transaction and protocol-enforced, so participants see only what they are party to. The token is optional, unlike networks where the native asset is mandatory. And there was no presale or founder allocation: coins can only be minted by providing measurable utility.
On Ethereum and most general-purpose chains, gas must be paid in the native asset and transactions are public by default. Canton inverts both. Unlike privacy coins such as Monero or Zcash, it targets confidentiality between named, regulated counterparties rather than individual anonymity. Unlike permissioned enterprise chains, anyone can join.
Transfers are validated under a two-thirds Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, and every parameter change, including the Super Validator set, minting curve and fees, needs a two-thirds majority. Each Super Validator publishes its ledger view so the public portion can be verified independently. Daml limits what applications can do to assets they do not control.
Institutional tokenization stalls on one problem: banks cannot put client positions on a ledger competitors can read, and will not accept a network run by one vendor. Canton is among the few designs built around that constraint, so its progress is a useful proxy for whether regulated finance settles on public infrastructure.
Canton Coin is listed on a growing set of centralized exchanges, including regional venues such as Bithumb, and can be earned by running validator infrastructure or providing fee-generating applications.
Canton Coin is held through a Canton participant node or a wallet service that runs one for you, not a standard EVM wallet. Running a node gives the most direct custody but requires infrastructure. Most holders rely on an exchange or custodian, so confirm withdrawal support before buying if self-custody matters.
