Hedera is a public proof-of-stake network that reaches consensus with the hashgraph algorithm instead of a conventional blockchain. It is built for fast finality, fair transaction ordering and low fees that are set in US dollars, and it is overseen by the Hedera Council, a group of large companies and universities with equal votes and term limits. HBAR is the network's native token: it pays for every transaction and is staked to weight consensus among the network's nodes.
Hedera matters because it takes a different route from most smart contract platforms: native services for tokens and timestamped messaging sit alongside an EVM-compatible contract layer, and governance is held by a named council rather than by anonymous token holders.
Official resources:
The hashgraph algorithm was invented by Dr. Leemon Baird, who co-founded Swirlds, the company that originally held the hashgraph patents. Mance Harmon was his business partner in founding Hedera.
Key milestones:
2018: token sale Hedera raised $124 million through Simple Agreements for Future Tokens (SAFTs), according to its own launch announcement.
September 16, 2019: mainnet Open Access Any developer could create an account and build on the mainnet beta. The same date started a planned 15-year distribution schedule for HBAR, and Hedera open-sourced its mirror node code.
2022: patents bought and opened The council voted to purchase the hashgraph patent rights and release the algorithm under the Apache open-source license.
July 21, 2022: native staking goes live Phase 1 of a four-phase staking rollout went live on testnet and mainnet. Rewards were designed to switch on only after the staking reward account (0.0.800) held a 250 million HBAR threshold and the council voted to enable them.
March 9, 2023: precompile attack
An attacker exploited a bug in the Smart Contract Service to drain liquidity pools on HeliSwap, SaucerSwap and Pangolin. Hedera estimated the loss at about $600,000, disabled network proxies to stop further damage, and the council completed a code upgrade within 41 hours of discovery. Contracts can no longer use delegatecall to reach the token service precompiles.
September 16, 2024: code donated to the Linux Foundation Hedera's full codebase (consensus node, mirror node, JSON-RPC relay, SDKs in several languages and the explorer interface) was contributed to Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust as the project Hiero, under Apache 2.0. Code governance moved to the Linux Foundation; operation of the Hedera network stayed with the council.
Hashgraph is a gossip protocol. Each node repeatedly shares what it knows with randomly chosen peers, and it also shares the history of who told whom what ("gossip about gossip"). From that shared history every node can calculate how every other node would vote, so consensus is reached through virtual voting without sending vote messages across the network.
Properties Hedera documents:
Nodes that reach consensus are operated by council members. Separate mirror nodes store transaction history and ledger state and serve queries without taking part in consensus.
Hedera exposes several native services rather than relying only on smart contracts:
Paying network fees Every transaction, token operation, contract call and file action is paid in HBAR. Fees are priced in US dollars, starting at $0.0001, and converted to HBAR at the time of each transaction, so costs stay predictable for businesses.
Securing consensus through staking Any account can stake its balance to a node. There is no minimum amount, no bonding, no slashing and no lock-up (a 24-hour minimum staking period applies), and the balance stays liquid. Rewards accrue for up to 365 days before a payout must be triggered, and the council sets a maximum annual reward rate.
Fixed supply Total HBAR supply is fixed at 50 billion, released into the market on the 15-year distribution schedule that began at Open Access in 2019.
Compared with Ethereum, Hedera offers the same EVM contract model but adds native token and consensus services, fixed-dollar fees and fork-free finality, while giving up Ethereum's large permissionless validator set. Compared with Algorand or Avalanche, which also target fast finality, Hedera's node operation and governance are concentrated in a known council rather than open to anyone who stakes. Its closest peers in positioning are enterprise-oriented networks such as XDC Network, which also court regulated businesses.
Security rests on three layers: the aBFT properties of hashgraph, stake-weighted voting in which a transaction needs nodes representing more than two thirds of staked HBAR, and a council of identifiable organizations that operate nodes and approve software upgrades. Documented mainnet throttles (for example, 10,000 transfer transactions per second and 15 million gas per second for smart contracts) protect nodes from overload. The 2023 precompile attack shows that application-layer bugs remain possible even when consensus itself is sound.
Hedera is the main live test of whether a public ledger governed by a named council of large organizations, with dollar-priced fees and fair ordering, can win real business workloads. Moving its code to the Linux Foundation separated software ownership from network operation, which strengthens its long-term neutrality case.
HBAR trades on many large centralized exchanges in pairs against USD, EUR, stablecoins and BTC. Availability and payment methods depend on your country. HBAR can also be swapped for Hedera tokens on DEXs that run on the network.
