ADI is the native token of ADI Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by the ADI Foundation for government, enterprise and institutional use. The chain executes transactions off chain, proves them with zero knowledge validity proofs, and finalizes on Ethereum, using zkSync's zkStack together with the Airbender proving system. It is EVM compatible, so existing Ethereum contracts and tooling work with minimal changes, and it is designed to host Layer 3 networks with built in compliance features so a country or institution can run a domain under its own rules. ADI is the gas token for the Layer 2 and its Layer 3 domains, the settlement asset inside the ecosystem, and a staking asset.
Official resources:
ADI Chain is developed by the ADI Foundation, an Abu Dhabi based organization. Announcements around the mainnet launch describe the Foundation as backed by Sirius International Holding, the digital arm of International Holding Company, and present ADI Chain as an institutional Layer 2 aimed at the Middle East and North Africa region and other emerging markets. The Foundation's stated mission, repeated throughout its documentation, is to bring one billion people onchain in emerging markets by 2030.
The individuals behind the ADI Foundation are not identified in its official documentation. The docs describe the organization and its mission rather than a named founding team, so any specific attribution of founders should be treated as unverified.
Mainnet and the ADI token launched together, with listings on several centralized exchanges at launch. The network has continued to ship upgrades: the documentation records a move to a peer to peer node protocol applied to testnet on 18 August 2026 and to mainnet on 20 August 2026, which required external node operators to migrate clients to keep syncing.
ADI Chain is a validity proof rollup rather than an optimistic one. Transactions execute off chain on a sequencer, a prover generates a zero knowledge proof that the state transition is correct, and that proof is verified on Ethereum. Because correctness is proven rather than assumed and later challenged, there is no fraud proof challenge window.
The proving stack is the notable part. ADI builds on zkSync's Atlas and Airbender components, with Airbender described as a proof system built to prove RISC-V bytecode execution efficiently. Independent review of the deployment notes STARK proofs wrapped in SNARK proofs for efficiency, and that the state diffs needed to reconstruct state are published to Ethereum as blobs or calldata, so data availability sits on Ethereum rather than with a separate committee.
Assets move between Ethereum and ADI Chain through a canonical bridge built on Bridgehub and Asset Router contracts on Ethereum. The chain supports account abstraction and paymaster based gas abstraction, so applications can sponsor fees for their users.
The documentation sets out three functions. First, gas: ADI is the primary gas token for every transaction on ADI Chain and its Layer 3 domains, using zkStack's custom gas token capability, so users and developers do not need to hold ETH. That matters for institutional users because it removes a second asset from treasury and accounting workflows. Second, settlement: ADI is described as the settlement currency inside the ecosystem, used for payments between enterprises, developers, network operators and users. Third, staking: holders can stake ADI into a treasury backed pool to earn rewards, and the documentation is explicit that this model avoids minting new supply, so rewards come from the treasury rather than issuance.
On supply, the token has a genesis supply of 999,999,999 ADI, and the tokenomics page publishes the full allocation: a Community Fund at 35 percent unlocking over 72 months, Treasury Reserves at 25 percent over 108 months, Private Investors at 12 percent with a 12 month cliff, Partnerships and Team at 10 percent each on the same cliff and schedule, and a token incentivization pool and a liquidity allocation of 4 percent each available immediately. During the first year, tokens unlock monthly on the ninth.
The clearest differentiator is compliance as a network feature rather than an application concern. Layer 3 domains can carry identity layers, auditability and jurisdiction specific rule sets, which is what a central bank, a national registry or a regulated payment operator needs before putting anything real on a public chain. Most general purpose rollups leave that entirely to applications.
The second is the proving stack. ADI is described as the first public blockchain built with zkSync's Airbender prover, making it an early production deployment of a proof system rather than a fork of a mature one. That cuts both ways: a technical distinction and a maturity risk. The third is the target market, since the network is positioned around government and institutional infrastructure in emerging markets rather than competing for existing DeFi liquidity.
Against other zero knowledge rollups, ADI's shape is familiar: off chain execution, validity proofs, Ethereum data availability. What differs is the custom gas token, since most rollups use ETH for fees, and the explicit Layer 3 compliance framework. Against enterprise permissioned chains, ADI settles to Ethereum and publishes its data there, so an institutional Layer 3 can be rule bound without being a closed ledger nobody outside can verify. Against general purpose Layer 2 ecosystems, a network built for retail DeFi optimizes for liquidity depth and composability, while one built for government payments and registries optimizes for identity, auditability and predictable cost.
On decentralization, an honest comparison matters. Independent review currently places ADI at the earliest maturity stage, with a single centralized operator proposing blocks, a whitelist restricting who may publish state roots, and no delay on contract code upgrades.
ADI Chain inherits settlement security from Ethereum. Each batch is proved with zero knowledge validity proofs and verified on Ethereum before state finalizes, so correctness does not depend on the chain's own validator set. The data needed to reconstruct state is published to Ethereum as state diffs, so history can be recovered without trusting an external availability provider.
The operational picture deserves equal attention. Independent review describes a centralized operator that alone proposes blocks and a whitelist restricting which proposers may publish state roots, with the consequence that withdrawals would freeze if that operator failed. The same review flags that there is no delay on contract code upgrades, classified as a critical risk because an upgrade can take effect without a window for users to exit, and that transactions can be censored or filtered without delay. Node software availability is listed as under review. None of that is unusual for a new rollup, and the documentation does publish instructions for running an external node, but it means day to day security depends on the operator and the upgrade keys, not only on the proof system.
Most Layer 2 networks compete for the same crypto native users and liquidity. ADI is one of the more serious attempts to build for a different customer: public sector and regulated institutions that need auditability, identity and jurisdictional rules before they can use a public chain at all. Whether that market materializes is open, but the design questions are real ones, including how to put compliance in the protocol layer without turning the network into a closed system. It is also an early production test of a new zero knowledge proving stack, which matters well beyond ADI if it proves out.
ADI trades on several centralized exchanges, having been listed on multiple venues at mainnet launch, and it also exists as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, which makes it tradable on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. Verify the contract address against the ADI Foundation's own documentation before buying. Note the distinction between the Ethereum ERC-20 and the same asset used as gas on ADI Chain: moving between the two goes through the canonical bridge documented by the Foundation, not a generic third party bridge.
On Ethereum, ADI is a standard ERC-20 token and works with any Ethereum compatible wallet, with hardware wallets recommended for larger holdings. To use ADI on the network itself, add ADI Chain to your wallet using the published network details, including chain ID 36900 and the official RPC endpoint, then bridge across using the canonical bridge. The chain supports account abstraction and has Safe smart account interfaces deployed, so teams and institutions can use multi signature custody. Because staking is offered through a treasury backed pool, check the Foundation's official documentation for how and where staking is performed, and avoid third party sites claiming to offer it.
