ENS maps readable names such as alice.eth to machine-readable identifiers: addresses on many chains, content hashes and text records. It is hierarchical like DNS, but ownership and resolution run through Ethereum smart contracts rather than registrars and zone files. ENS launched on Ethereum mainnet on May 4, 2017, created by Nick Johnson and Alex Van de Sande at the Ethereum Foundation, then spun out. Core development is handled by ENS Labs Limited, a Singapore-based non-profit formerly named True Names Limited, which states it has never taken venture capital. The token arrived in November 2021 with the DAO: 100 million ENS were minted, 25 percent airdropped to holders of a .eth name at an October 31, 2021 snapshot, 25 percent to contributors, 50 percent to the treasury.
The registry stores each name's owner and resolver address. Registrars own top-level domains such as .eth and set the rules beneath them. Resolvers return the records, so changing what a name points to means updating its resolver entry, not the registry.
Registration uses commit-and-reveal to stop front-running: submit a commitment hash, wait the 60-second minimum commitment age, then register with identical parameters. Renewal is priced yearly by length, at 5 US dollars for five or more characters, 160 for four and 640 for three, paid in ETH. After expiry a name enters a grace period, then a 21-day premium auction whose price decays toward zero. Names are ERC-721 tokens, and the NameWrapper adds an ERC-1155 form with fuses.
ENS is a governance token, not a fee token; registrations and renewals are paid in ETH. Holders vote or delegate their weight, and the DAO uses it to approve treasury spending, set parameters and approve upgrades. Because the DAO receives .eth registration revenue, that revenue is what the token governs, though holding ENS confers no claim on it.
ENS output is consumed almost entirely by other software, which makes it infrastructure rather than a destination product. Through CCIP-Read, a name registered on L1 can resolve to data held on a rollup or a company's own server, so applications can issue millions of subnames without writing each to Ethereum.
Most name services are chain-specific. ENS anchored on Ethereum and extended outward, so one .eth name can carry address records for many chains and delegate resolution elsewhere, while services on Solana, Sui and BNB Chain resolve inside their own ecosystem. Its funding also differs: a non-profit developer and a treasury fed by recurring registration revenue.
Registry entries, registrar logic and resolver records are contract state on mainnet, so an attacker must compromise the owning account or find a contract flaw rather than breach a central registry. Protocol changes require DAO votes.
Names are leases, not property, and one left unrenewed passes into a premium auction. Pricing is set in dollars but paid in ETH, so renewal cost in ETH moves with the market. Readable names invite impersonation, including lookalike and mixed-script names used in phishing. Governance is concentrated in whoever holds or receives delegated ENS, and the DAO has had public disputes over treasury control.
Address readability is a persistent usability problem, and ENS is the closest thing Ethereum has to a shared answer. Its position rests on integrations rather than features.
