What Is Plume (PLUME)?

Plume is an EVM-compatible blockchain built specifically for real-world assets (RWAs) and the financial applications that use them. Instead of treating tokenized treasuries, private credit and structured products as one more asset class bolted onto a general-purpose chain, Plume puts tokenization, identity checks and compliance tooling directly into the network stack, so regulated assets can move through normal DeFi mechanics such as lending, looping and yield strategies.

PLUME is the network's native token. It pays gas on the chain, is used for staking, and carries governance weight over the protocol.

Who Founded Plume? (History)

Plume was founded in 2024 and is based in New York. Its founding team has been publicly identified as Chris Yin, Eugene Shen and Teddy Pornprinya, with backgrounds drawn from firms including Coinbase, dYdX and Robinhood.

The project raised a seed round of roughly $10 million in May 2024 led by Haun Ventures, followed by a further round of about $20 million in December 2024 that included Brevan Howard Digital, Lightspeed Faction and Galaxy Ventures. Plume ran a public testnet through 2024 and launched its mainnet, branded Plume Genesis, in June 2025.

How Plume Works

Plume is usually explained through three layers.

1. Execution and settlement The chain runs the Arbitrum Nitro codebase as an Arbitrum Orbit deployment, with state roots posted to and challenged on Ethereum. Plume's own materials often describe the network as an L1 because it operates its own gas, staking and governance economics, while the underlying arrangement is a rollup-style chain settling to Ethereum. Both descriptions circulate, so read the current documentation rather than trusting a single label.

2. Data availability Plume was originally announced with Celestia as its data availability layer and later moved transaction data to a committee-based arrangement. This is a configuration decision that can change again, so treat the official docs as authoritative.

3. Asset and compliance layer Tokenization, identity verification and transfer rules are native infrastructure rather than third-party add-ons, which is the main reason the chain exists separately at all.

Mainnet uses chain ID 98866, with RPC access at rpc.plume.org and a block explorer at explorer.plume.org. PLUME is the gas currency, which makes Plume one of the Orbit deployments running a custom gas token rather than ETH.

Key Ecosystem Components

The main pieces of the Plume stack are:

• Arc, the asset tokenization engine covering issuance, onramps and offramps, identity verification, primary offerings and secondary trading
• Nexus, a data highway that brings offchain asset data onchain so contracts can price and manage RWA exposure
• Nest, the vault layer where deposits are routed into institutional strategies and represented by transferable vault tokens
• pUSD and pETH, the network's stablecoin and ETH representation used across ecosystem applications
• Plume Portal, the bridge, swap, staking and rewards front end

PLUME Token Utility

PLUME is used for:

• Paying transaction fees as the chain's native gas asset
• Staking, which supports network operation and earns protocol rewards
• Governance participation over protocol parameters and treasury decisions
• Ecosystem incentives distributed to applications and users on the network

A bridged ERC-20 representation of PLUME also exists on Ethereum and on BNB Chain, and that is what most centralized venues list. Always confirm which representation you hold before bridging or withdrawing.

What Makes Plume Unique?

Plume's distinguishing choice is vertical integration. Most chains host RWA projects; Plume tries to own the whole path from issuance through compliance to composability, so a tokenized asset is usable in lending markets and yield strategies on the same chain where it was minted. A second distinguishing feature is the audience: tokenized credit and treasuries are meant to become inputs to familiar DeFi behavior for crypto-native users, not just static holdings in an institutional custody account.

How Plume Differs from Similar Chains

Compared with general-purpose L2s such as Arbitrum or Optimism, Plume narrows its scope deliberately. It optimizes for one asset category rather than for arbitrary application demand, which trades breadth for depth in tooling.

Compared with RWA protocols that live on top of other chains, such as tokenized credit and treasury issuers, Plume is infrastructure rather than a single product. It provides rails those issuers would otherwise assemble themselves.

Security depends on several distinct layers:

• Ethereum settlement, where state roots are proposed and can be challenged through an interactive fraud proof system
• The validator configuration, which has been permissioned rather than open, meaning users depend on a whitelisted set of parties to challenge an invalid state
• The sequencer arrangement, which is centrally operated, with an L1 force-inclusion path as the fallback if the sequencer censors or fails
• The data availability committee, whose members hold transaction data that is not published in full on Ethereum
• Application-level security in the vaults, tokenization contracts and bridges, which is where most user funds actually sit

Independent rollup maturity trackers classify Plume as an early-stage deployment on these criteria, which is common for a young chain but is a real consideration.

Risks and Considerations

Key risks include:

• Centralization of the sequencer, proposer and data availability committee, which concentrates trust in a small number of parties
• Counterparty and legal risk in the underlying real-world assets, which blockchain mechanics cannot resolve
• Regulatory exposure, since tokenized securities and credit products are governed by jurisdiction-specific rules that can change
• Smart contract risk in vaults, bridges and stablecoin contracts
• Concentration risk if a small number of vaults or asset issuers dominate network activity

Why Plume Matters

Tokenized real-world assets have moved from pilot projects to a recognized category, and the bottleneck is no longer whether an asset can be represented onchain but whether it can be issued compliantly and then actually used. Plume is one of the more complete attempts to solve both halves in one environment, which makes it a reasonable proxy for whether RWA infrastructure consolidates onto specialized chains or stays spread across general-purpose networks.
