Dusk is a public, permissionless layer 1 blockchain designed for regulated financial markets, built around the idea that a market workflow should be able to choose what is public, what is confidential and what is disclosed to specific parties. It pairs a transparent account model with a shielded zero-knowledge transaction model, adds identity and selective-disclosure primitives, and provides deterministic finality suited to settlement. DUSK is the native token, used to pay gas and to stake for consensus participation. The project's own framing is privacy-preserving infrastructure for regulated onchain finance with selective disclosure.
Official resources:
Dusk was started in 2018 by a founding group led by Emanuele Francioni, who has served as project and technology lead, with Jelle Pol among the co-founders leading the business side. The project has been associated with the European regulatory environment from the start, and its design references frameworks such as MiFID II, MiCA and the DLT Pilot Regime.
DUSK was first distributed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and later also existed as a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain. Mainnet went live in early 2025 after roughly six years of development, and holders of the bridged representations can migrate to native DUSK using the migration guide in the documentation. Development has continued through named network upgrades including Aegis and Boreas.
Dusk separates settlement from execution. DuskDS is the settlement and data availability foundation, running consensus, providing finality and holding the transaction models used to move DUSK and pay for execution. Consensus is Succinct Attestation, a permissionless committee-based proof-of-stake protocol. Each round runs three steps: a randomly selected provisioner proposes a candidate block, a committee validates it, and a second committee ratifies the outcome and finalizes the block. Finality is deterministic, so a ratified block does not reorganize in normal operation.
Two transaction models sit on top. Moonlight is the transparent, account-based model with public balances, suited to payments, treasury activity and exchange integration. Phoenix is the shielded, note-based model using zero-knowledge proofs to verify transfers without publishing balances, participants and amounts. Phoenix remains live protocol technology and part of historical chain state, but admission of new Phoenix transactions was temporarily paused following the Boreas upgrade and is intended to reopen in a follow-up upgrade, with Moonlight available for new public transfers meanwhile.
Execution happens in two environments. DuskVM is a Wasmtime-based environment for Rust and WebAssembly contracts running directly on the layer 1, the path for contracts needing native assets, the transaction models, privacy or zero-knowledge capability. DuskEVM is an OP Stack based Ethereum-compatible layer that settles and publishes data through DuskDS, where DUSK is the native gas token; it is live on public testnet. The cryptographic foundation includes the BLS12-381 and JubJub curves, Schnorr signatures, Poseidon hashing, a sparse Merkle tree implementation and a PLONK-based proving stack.
DUSK is used for gas and staking. Gas is paid in DUSK: users set a gas limit and a gas price denominated in LUX and pay gas used multiplied by gas price, with unused gas not charged and a reverted transaction still paying the gas consumed. On mainnet DUSK has 9 decimals, where 1 DUSK equals 1,000,000,000 LUX, while the ERC-20 and BEP-20 representations use 18 decimals, which matters when migrating.
Staking secures the network. Minimum direct stake is 1,000 DUSK with no upper bound. A new stake activates at the epoch boundary after the next one, normally about 6 to 12 hours, where an epoch is 2,160 blocks. There is no protocol waiting period for unstaking, though a partial unstake must leave a position at or above the minimum. Adding to an active stake activates 90 percent immediately and records 10 percent as locked stake that remains yours but does not participate in consensus.
The supply model is 500,000,000 DUSK issued initially plus 500,000,000 emitted over 36 years on a geometric decay schedule that halves every four years, for a maximum of 1,000,000,000. Each block reward is newly emitted DUSK plus that block's transaction fees, split 70 percent to the block generator plus up to a further 10 percent based on credits in the certificate, 10 percent to a development fund, 5 percent to the validation committee and 5 percent to the ratification committee, with any undistributed bonus burned.
Dusk does not treat privacy and compliance as opposites. Most designs pick one: transparent chains that satisfy supervisors but expose positions and counterparties, or privacy chains that protect users but cannot demonstrate anything to a regulator. Dusk offers both a public and a shielded transaction model on the same layer 1, plus selective-disclosure credentials through Citadel 2, so a workflow can publish what must be public and reveal the rest only to authorized parties. The second distinguishing choice is that it stayed permissionless, targeting regulated markets without gating who may run a node or hold the native asset.
Against Polymesh, which serves the same market, the contrast is direct: Polymesh is public permissioned, with verified identity required to touch assets and block production limited to licensed financial entities, while Dusk is public permissionless and uses zero-knowledge proofs and selective disclosure to do that work. Against Secret Network and Oasis, which are general purpose privacy platforms, Dusk is narrowed to financial market infrastructure, with asset eligibility, delivery versus payment and disclosure workflows as first-class concerns. Against Plume, MANTRA and other real world asset chains, Dusk puts confidentiality at the base layer rather than treating tokenization as the whole problem.
Security comes from Succinct Attestation. Provisioners stake DUSK, are randomly selected into proposal, validation and ratification roles, and earn rewards from emissions and transaction fees, with deterministic finality once a block is ratified. Misbehavior is penalized on two levels: soft penalties apply to failed participation and can suspend a provisioner and move part of active stake into locked stake, while hard slashing takes directly from stake. The documentation includes a slashing recovery guide, a practical acknowledgement that operational failure and malice differ. Privacy guarantees rest on the zero-knowledge stack, using established primitives, though zero-knowledge circuits are complex and a circuit bug is a different failure class from ordinary contract logic. The node software is open source on GitHub.
The unsolved problem in regulated tokenization is not issuing a token. It is that regulated markets cannot publish positions, counterparties and balances by default, and public blockchains do exactly that. Dusk is one of the few projects that treats this as the core engineering problem rather than a detail, and it has shipped a working mainnet with both public and shielded models rather than only a paper design.
DUSK is available on centralized exchanges and, in its bridged forms, on decentralized venues. The token exists natively on Dusk mainnet and as ERC-20 and BEP-20 representations on Ethereum and BNB Chain. Before depositing or withdrawing, confirm exactly which form a venue supports, since the three are not interchangeable at the network level and the mainnet token uses 9 decimals while the bridged forms use 18. The documentation includes a mainnet migration guide.
Native DUSK is held in Dusk wallets, including the official wallet and the rusk-wallet command line tool used by node operators. Self-custody is required to stake directly by running a provisioner node. Third-party staking pools remove the need to operate infrastructure but add operator, custody and smart contract risk separate from the base protocol, and should be evaluated on their own terms. Bridged DUSK can be held in standard Ethereum and BNB Chain wallets. Hardware wallets are safer for long-term holdings.
