Injective is a layer 1 blockchain built specifically for financial applications. Unlike general-purpose chains where exchanges are ordinary smart contracts, Injective ships a fully on-chain central limit order book as a native chain module, so any application can plug into shared order flow and liquidity instead of building its own matching engine. It is built with the Cosmos SDK, connects to the wider IBC network, and since November 2025 also runs a native EVM alongside its WebAssembly environment. INJ is the native token, used for staking, fees, governance and a recurring burn mechanism.
Official resources:
Injective was founded by Eric Chen and Albert Chon and first emerged publicly through the Binance Labs incubation programme in 2018.
After testnet phases through 2020 and 2021, the sovereign Cosmos-based mainnet launched in November 2021. Tokenomics were revised in 2024 under a governance proposal known as INJ 3.0, which tightened inflation bands and made supply respond faster to the staking rate. The native EVM launched on mainnet in November 2025.
Injective is a proof-of-stake chain with Tendermint-style consensus and fast finality, and its distinguishing components are chain-level modules rather than deployed contracts: the exchange module maintains the order book, matching and settlement, and there are modules for auctions, oracles, tokenization and insurance funds.
Order matching uses frequent batch auctions rather than continuous first-come matching. Orders arriving within a block are cleared together at a uniform price, which removes much of the advantage of being marginally faster and is intended to blunt front-running and other extractable value strategies.
INJ is staked by validators and delegators to secure the chain and earn rewards, and it is the governance token for on-chain proposals. It is used for transaction fees and as collateral in derivative markets and insurance funds. Its most distinctive mechanic is the burn auction: a portion of the fee revenue generated by applications on Injective is collected into a basket, auctioned weekly, and the winning bid, paid in INJ, is burned.
The order book being part of the chain, not an application on it, is the central design decision. Liquidity becomes a shared public resource across applications rather than fragmented per protocol, and the chain itself captures and recycles exchange economics.
Cosmos provides the SDK and interoperability layer Injective builds with, but is not itself finance-specific. dYdX also moved to its own Cosmos chain for an order book exchange, though it centres on a single application while Injective offers its modules to any builder. Hyperliquid runs its own high-performance chain around an order book as well, with a more vertically integrated product.
The chain is used for spot and perpetual futures trading, derivatives on assets that are hard to list elsewhere, tokenized exposure to real-world assets and indices, structured and automated trading strategies, and lending or collateral markets that need reliable order book pricing.
Security comes from proof-of-stake validators and delegated stake, with slashing for downtime and double signing. Applications additionally depend on oracle inputs and on insurance funds that backstop derivative markets during liquidation shortfalls.
Derivatives are the core activity, which means leverage, liquidation and oracle risk sit at the centre of the ecosystem rather than at the edges. Burn volume depends on application revenue, so a decline in trading activity weakens the deflationary mechanic. Validator and staking concentration is a governance consideration on any proof-of-stake chain.
Injective is the clearest test of the argument that financial infrastructure belongs in the protocol rather than in application code. Its burn auction is also one of the few token mechanisms tied mechanically to measurable protocol revenue.
INJ is listed on most major centralized exchanges and trades on decentralized venues within its own ecosystem. An ERC-20 representation also exists on Ethereum, so confirm which version a venue supports before depositing or withdrawing.
Native INJ can be held in Cosmos-compatible wallets such as Keplr or Leap, and in the ecosystem's own wallets, with hardware wallet support available. Staking and governance require self-custody of native INJ.
