Gemini Dollar is a US dollar stablecoin issued by Gemini Trust Company, LLC, a New York trust company supervised by the New York State Department of Financial Services. It is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum designed to hold a strict 1:1 peg, with tokens in circulation matched by dollar balances held at a US bank. Gemini began issuing GUSD in September 2018, making it one of the first stablecoins issued inside a state regulatory framework rather than as an unsupervised corporate liability. Tokens are created when a customer buys them on the Gemini platform and destroyed when a customer sells them back.
Official resources:
GUSD was created by Gemini, the exchange and custodian founded in 2014 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. The whitepaper is published under Gemini Trust Company, LLC rather than under individual authors, and frames the project as a response to earlier fiat-pegged stablecoins that, in Gemini's description, lacked supervision, transparency or examination. The parent is now listed on Nasdaq as Gemini Space Station, Inc.
Creation and redemption happen on the Gemini platform: a buy order debits dollars and credits GUSD, a sell order reverses it and destroys the tokens. The contract design was built for upgradability under supervision: Proxy is the permanent public address holders interact with, Impl holds the logic governing transfers and issuance, and Store holds the ledger, so the implementation can be replaced without changing the token's address.
The Custodian contract sits behind Proxy and Store and resolves to an offline keyset, creating an offline approval path for upgrades. PrintLimiter caps how much GUSD can be printed with an online key alone. On the reserve side, a US bank holds the dollars and an independent accounting firm engaged by Gemini's audit committee examines the balance.
GUSD is a payment and settlement instrument, not a governance or fee token. It holds dollar value on-chain between trades, settles transfers outside banking hours, and provides a dollar leg in decentralized exchange pools and lending markets.
The regulatory posture is one half: a New York trust company issuer under NYDFS supervision, with the dollar balance examined monthly by an outside firm rather than self-reported. The architecture is the other: many early stablecoins were immutable or controlled by a single owner key, whereas a custodianship chain ending in offline keys made upgrades and issuance deliberate, auditable actions.
Against the largest fiat-backed stablecoins, GUSD is smaller and more tied to one exchange for minting and redemption. Against newer bank-issued dollars, it predates the US federal framework and rests on state trust supervision. Against crypto-collateralized dollars, it has no overcollateralization or liquidation machinery, so stability depends on the issuer honoring redemption.
Traders use GUSD as a dollar parking asset between positions, and businesses use it for transfers that settle around the clock. Decentralized finance protocols accept it as collateral or as a pool asset, and institutions wanting an issuer under a named US regulator use it for treasury and settlement.
Keys approving high-risk actions are held offline in Gemini's cold storage and managed on hardware security modules rated FIPS PUB 140-2 Level 3 or higher. Those actions need signatures from at least two signers, are time-locked before execution, and can be revoked while pending. The contracts were audited by Trail of Bits.
GUSD is a centralized liability, so holders depend on Gemini staying solvent, staying licensed and honoring redemption. The issuer can upgrade the implementation and can be required to restrict addresses under legal orders. Reserve assurance comes from periodic examination, leaving a gap between the last report and now. Liquidity is thinner than for the largest stablecoins, and US stablecoin rules continue to evolve.
GUSD is a reference point for the argument that stablecoins belong inside a supervisory framework. Its 2018 whitepaper argued that a fiat-pegged token is as much a trust problem as a computer science one, and proposed licensing, examination and offline approval as the answer. Much of that became standard practice.
The primary route is creation and redemption at 1:1 on the Gemini platform for eligible customers. GUSD is also listed on several centralized exchanges and trades on Ethereum decentralized exchanges, with availability depending on jurisdiction.
As an ERC-20 token, GUSD can be held in any Ethereum wallet. Browser extension and mobile wallets suit everyday use, and hardware wallets keep keys offline for larger balances. A bridged representation also exists on Near Protocol, so confirm the chain and contract before sending funds.
