GHO is a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin native to the Aave Protocol, designed to hold a value of one US dollar. It is not backed by bank deposits: it is minted when users supply approved collateral to Aave and borrow against it, and burned when the debt is repaid. Aave Governance controls which contracts may mint it, how much, and the rate borrowers pay, and that interest accrues to the Aave DAO treasury rather than to lenders. GHO launched July 15, 2023.
Official resources:
GHO was not founded by a separate company. It was proposed to Aave Governance in July 2022, approved by AAVE holders, and deployed a year later. Aave itself was created by Stani Kulechov, who launched its predecessor ETHLend in 2017, rebranded to Aave in 2018, and relaunched with a liquidity pool model in January 2020. GHO's parameters are set by DAO contributors and delegates, not a named founding team.
GHO uses a facilitator model. A facilitator is a contract Aave Governance has approved to mint and burn GHO, each with a bucket capacity setting the maximum it may have outstanding. Governance adds, removes, and resizes facilitators, and the sum of capacities caps total supply.
The main facilitator is the Aave V3 Ethereum market: a user supplies collateral, borrows GHO under normal collateral factor rules, and the tokens are created then rather than drawn from depositors. The peg relies on overcollateralization plus arbitrage, and governance can move the borrow rate directly, a more explicit lever than most stablecoins have.
GHO functions as a dollar unit issued by a protocol rather than a bank-facing issuer. Holders use it as a medium of exchange, a stable leg in trading pairs, collateral where accepted, and a savings asset.
Where a fiat-backed issuer earns yield on reserves, here the borrower pays interest and the DAO collects it. GHO carries no governance rights: those belong to AAVE.
The facilitator and bucket architecture separates the right to mint from the act of minting, so governance can extend issuance rights to new contracts with a hard per-entity ceiling rather than one global cap. GHO is also issued by a lender that already holds diversified collateral and years of liquidation experience, so it inherits risk infrastructure.
Dai and USDS have progressively increased reliance on real-world assets and centralized stablecoin backing, shifting risk off-chain, whereas GHO's backing is the collateral supplied to Aave markets. Ethena's USDe is not overcollateralized at all, being a delta-hedged synthetic dollar dependent on perpetual futures funding, while sUSD uses a debt pool where minters share collective debt.
Borrowing dollar liquidity against collateral without selling it, the primary minting path. Holding a stablecoin whose backing and parameters are verifiable on-chain. Providing stablecoin pool liquidity. Settling across the chains GHO is bridged to, such as Arbitrum, Base, and Avalanche.
The codebase is MIT licensed and has been reviewed by OpenZeppelin, ABDK, and Sigma Prime, with formal verification by Certora and an Immunefi bug bounty. Economically, security comes from overcollateralization and Aave's liquidation engine, which sells collateral when a position falls below its health threshold. The Umbrella module backstops deficits.
Solvency depends on the value and liquidity of the collateral backing GHO, so a sharp correlated drawdown is the principal systemic risk. Governance is a live risk surface in both directions, since parameters that protect the peg can also be loosened. GHO traded below one dollar from shortly after launch until January 2024, reaching roughly $0.95 in November 2023; restoring it took higher borrow rates and the Stability Module.
GHO is the clearest current example of a large lending protocol issuing its own dollar rather than routing users into someone else's, shifting revenue to the DAO and giving Aave a policy lever. It also tests whether protocol-native, fully collateralized stablecoins can scale without drifting toward off-chain reserves, the direction most predecessors took.
GHO can be minted directly by supplying collateral to the Aave V3 market and borrowing against it, the native issuance route. It also trades on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum and the chains it is bridged to, and on some centralized exchanges. GHO uses a different address per chain, so verify the contract first.
GHO is an ERC-20 token, so any Ethereum-compatible wallet will hold it, as will wallets on the other EVM networks where it is deployed. Hardware wallets are stronger for larger balances. Be clear which version you hold: plain GHO, a savings wrapper, and staked GHO carry different risk.

Aave launched its V3 lending protocol on Monad with 12 supported assets as the network commits $15 million in first-year incentives to build liquidity and adoption.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov previewed Aavenomics 3.0 on X Thursday, an automated on-chain buyback mechanism that would route all protocol and GHO revenue to AAVE holders by default, replacing the existing discretionary committee-directed program.

The founder said all Aave protocol and GHO revenue flows to the AAVE token and that the brand and software belong to holders, responding to a report that Kraken is in talks to buy a 15% stake at a $385 million valuation.
