Rei is the ecosystem token of Rei Labs (formerly presented as 0xReisearch), an applied AI research group that builds "Core", an adaptive reasoning system designed to learn from use and keep useful structure over time. The REI token started with Unit 00, an AI agent known as Rei, and is described by the project as the token for access, ownership, attribution and exchange across its planned AI marketplaces. It matters as one of the AI-agent tokens that pairs a token with its own research stack rather than a thin wrapper around a third-party language model.
REI has a fixed total supply of 1,000,000,000 and trades as an ERC-20 token on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum layer 2.
The team does not publish individual founders' names on the pages reviewed for this article. The Rei Labs website links to the same GitHub organisation (0xReisearch) and X account used by the earlier 0xReisearch documentation, which indicates that Rei Labs is the current name of the same group.

Earlier work, now marked "legacy" in the original documentation, included an X (Twitter) version of the Rei agent, an Oracle Bridge concept for bringing AI output on-chain, and an "ERCData" standard proposal.
Core, as documented, combines three parts:
Bowtie Architecture A memory system that stores information both as semantic vectors (explicit meaning) and as abstract concept nodes, so related ideas can be linked even when the wording differs.
Reasoning Cluster A decision layer that picks which models to use for a query, forms memories and maintains a concept graph.
Model Orchestration Routing sub-tasks to specialised statistical, perception and domain models.
Agents built on Core ("Units") keep short-term memories, long-term memories that decay, patterns and permanent concepts, so their behaviour evolves with each interaction. The current developer docs present two ways to use Core: Adapt-1, a structured API for decisions and predictions that carries learned state across calls, and Rei Chat, a conversational interface where Core reasons and a language model phrases the answer.
According to the project, REI grants access to the SDK and API, and is planned as the settlement asset for marketplaces where AI instances and published knowledge are traded. The documentation also describes planned revenue-funded REI buybacks with on-chain records. These marketplace roles are described as planned rather than live.

Rei Labs frames its work as research into memory and reasoning architectures inspired by biological and cognitive ideas, not as another chatbot on a general model. Its public documentation includes model details (such as Hanabi-1's layers and loss functions), which is more technical disclosure than many AI agent tokens provide.
Rei is a token, not a chain. Compared with Virtuals Protocol, which is a launchpad for many tokenised agents, Rei centres on one lab's own reasoning system. Compared with framework tokens such as AI Rig Complex, it offers a hosted API and learning substrate rather than an open-source agent framework. Bittensor, by contrast, is a network of competing AI subnets with its own chain.
REI is an ERC-20 token secured by Base and, through it, Ethereum. The main liquidity allocation was locked, and the research allocation sits in a multisig. No smart-contract audit for the token was found in the documentation reviewed. The AI services themselves are operated off-chain by Rei Labs.
Rei is an example of an AI token backed by visible, documented research output. Whether that research turns into paying users and REI demand is the key question for the project.
REI trades on decentralized exchanges on Base, and the documentation names Aerodrome as the home of its main liquidity pool. It may also be available on centralized venues. Confirm the Base contract address before trading.
REI can be held in any wallet that supports Base, such as MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet. A hardware wallet adds protection for larger balances.
