Nosana is a decentralized marketplace for GPU compute built on Solana. People with idle graphics cards register them as hosts, developers submit containerized workloads, and Solana programs handle the matching, the collateral and the settlement. In practice the network is used mostly for AI inference: running models, generating images and backing agent workloads on rented hardware rather than on a hyperscale cloud.
NOS is the network's Solana token. It is the unit hosts post as collateral, the unit jobs are paid and settled in, and the unit the protocol emits as incentives.
One thing is worth getting right up front. Nosana's original pitch was decentralized CI/CD, a crowd sourced way to run build and test pipelines for open source projects. That is not what the network is today. Mainnet went live in January 2025 as a GPU compute network, and current documentation, tooling and markets are organized around AI workloads.
Official sources:
Nosana was built by a European team that issued NOS on Solana in 2021 and originally framed the project as crowd computing for developer pipelines. Its Solana programs were published openly from early on, and the staking program was audited twice by Op Codes in August 2022.
Through 2023 and 2024 the focus moved from CPU pipelines to GPU inference as demand for AI compute grew. Mainnet launched on January 14, 2025. During 2025 the team shipped a REST API, the Nosana Kit TypeScript toolchain and a Deployment Manager intended to give a cloud like experience on decentralized hardware.
The project does not operate a formal DAO. Governance runs through Nosana Network Proposals, a public process kept in the network-proposals repository with voting at vote.nosana.com. The first such proposal, NNP-0001, rewrote the token model and is described below.
Hosts register hardware A GPU operator runs the Nosana node software, benchmarks the machine, and joins a market that corresponds to its GPU class. Hosts lock NOS as collateral to be eligible for work.
Buyers submit job definitions A job definition is a JSON document naming a container image, the commands to run, resource requirements and whether steps run in sequence or in parallel. Buyers submit through the dashboard, the REST API, the TypeScript SDK, the CLI or directly against the on chain programs.
Markets match supply to demand Each market represents a GPU class with its own pricing, quoted in NOS per second. The protocol routes a job to an eligible host in the matching market.
Solana programs settle the result Four on chain programs coordinate everything: Nosana Jobs, Nosana Staking, Nosana Rewards and Nosana Pools. All four are deployed and executable on Solana mainnet, and their source is public.
NOS is a Solana token with a hard ceiling of 100,000,000 units, and a live read of the mint account returns just under that figure, meaning essentially all of it has been issued. Its roles are:
NNP-0001, dated October 22, 2025, changed how emissions work. It passed a binding token holder vote held in November 2025 and took effect on November 29, 2025. Its main provisions:
The proposal was explicit about the problem it set out to solve. Under the old design any holder could stake and earn roughly 20 percent annualized regardless of whether they supplied capacity or bought compute, and the document estimated that about 2.76 million NOS had been paid out with no measurable link to network contribution. Two further items, payments in USDC and fiat and a fair job scheduler, were deferred to separate proposals.
Akash Network is a general decentralized cloud that leases whole containers and virtual machines across CPU and GPU, priced through a reverse auction. Render focuses on GPU rendering and, more recently, adjacent AI work, with a strong creative studio user base. io.net aggregates GPU capacity into clusters aimed at larger scale training and inference. Bittensor is a different animal entirely, rewarding models for the usefulness of their outputs rather than renting raw hardware.
Nosana's narrower position is inference oriented GPU jobs settled on Solana, with a token model tuned specifically to keep reliable capacity online. That focus is an advantage for its target workload and a limitation elsewhere: it is not built for long running training clusters or for general cloud hosting.
Nosana inherits Solana's consensus and validator security for its on chain accounting. The application layer adds host collateral that can be lost for bad behavior, benchmark and specification checks at registration, and a reputation score that steers work away from unreliable machines.
Two caveats deserve emphasis. The staking program was audited by Op Codes in August 2022, but the repository itself warns that most of the code base is unaudited. And because jobs run inside containers on third party hardware, buyers should treat host machines as untrusted for confidential data unless a confidential execution path is explicitly used.
Nosana is one of the clearer examples of a decentralized physical infrastructure network correcting its own incentives in public. The team published the problem, quantified the leakage, put a rewrite to a binding vote and shipped the result. Whether or not the model succeeds, the shift from paying idle capital to paying verified readiness is the right question for this category to be asking.

On chain, NOS trades through Solana aggregators and automated market makers. Confirm the mint address before swapping, since Solana token tickers are not unique.
After purchase, NOS can be held:
Always confirm you are interacting with the correct token mint, and read the current staking terms before locking anything, because the reward structure is changing under NNP-0001.
