Electroneum is a Layer 1 blockchain operated by the UK company Electroneum Ltd. Since 2024 it has run as the Electroneum Smart Chain, an EVM compatible network that uses Istanbul Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus with a known validator set, roughly five second blocks, and immediate finality once a block is committed.
ETN is the network's native asset. It pays transaction fees on the Smart Chain and is the unit that the project's consumer products, including its freelance marketplace, were built around. Electroneum is one of the older projects still shipping code: it began in 2017 as a mobile-first CryptoNote coin and has since been rebuilt twice, first away from proof of work and then onto an EVM chain.
Official sources:
Electroneum was created by British entrepreneur Richard Ells, who formed Electroneum Ltd in July 2017. The token sale ran in late 2017 and raised over 40 million dollars from more than 100,000 participants, one of the largest retail participation counts of that cycle. The original chain went live around the end of October 2017.
The first design was a CryptoNote derivative with a headline feature called mobile mining, which paid app users a scheduled reward rather than having phones perform real hashing. In 2019 the project moved off proof of work entirely to a moderated model it called Proof of Responsibility, where a fixed set of vetted organizations such as charities, NGOs, and later universities and infrastructure companies validated blocks.
The third stage arrived in March 2024 with the Aurelius hard fork and the launch of the Electroneum Smart Chain. Holders of legacy paper wallets created before that fork have until January 31, 2027 to migrate. After the fork, remaining coinbase emissions on the legacy chain are directed to a burn address so the overall supply cap is preserved.
EVM compatible execution The Smart Chain runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Solidity contracts, standard tooling, and Ethereum wallets work with it. The network identifies itself as chain 52014, with ETN as the 18 decimal native currency, and it supports EIP-155 replay protection and EIP-1559 style fee fields.
IBFT consensus A predetermined set of validator nodes takes turns proposing and validating blocks in round-robin order. Byzantine fault tolerant consensus of this type tolerates up to one third of validators being faulty or malicious, and it finalizes a block as soon as it is committed rather than waiting for probabilistic confirmations.
The legacy bridge Migration works by sweeping legacy chain balances to a bridge address, with an oracle on the Smart Chain watching that address and crediting the corresponding new balance. The project documents the migration as free of transaction fees.
A live check of the network confirms it is producing blocks normally. Reading the chain over a public RPC endpoint returned chain ID 52014 and a head block above 15.7 million with transactions in it, timestamped in September 2026.
ETN pays gas on the Electroneum Smart Chain and is the asset transferred between accounts and contracts. Its maximum supply is documented as 21,000,000,000 ETN, a cap the project has stated will not be exceeded, with block reward halvings scheduled roughly every four years from 2020 through 2032.
Under the current consensus design, ETN is not staked to secure the chain, because validators are chosen rather than bonded. That is the specific limitation the project's most recent whitepaper sets out to change, as described below.
Electroneum's distinguishing choice has always been the trade-off it makes on decentralization. Rather than an open validator market, it runs a curated validator set of identifiable institutions. That produces fast finality, near-zero fees, and low energy use, and it gives regulators and partners a named counterparty. It also concentrates control, which the project itself now describes as a limitation.
The second unusual trait is that Electroneum has consistently built consumer products rather than only infrastructure. AnyTask, a freelance marketplace aimed at users in regions with limited access to conventional payment rails, was designed to give ETN circulation outside exchange trading.
Against large permissionless Layer 1s, Electroneum trades open validator participation for speed, cost, and predictability. Against enterprise or consortium chains, it is fully public and its token trades freely. Against other EVM chains aimed at emerging markets, its longer history means most of its supply was distributed years ago through a retail token sale and a mobile app rather than a modern staking or airdrop program.
Security today rests on the honesty and availability of the known validator set, on IBFT's one third fault tolerance, and on standard EVM client hardening. Because validators are identified organizations rather than anonymous bonded operators, the practical security assumption is reputational and contractual as much as cryptoeconomic.
The whitepaper published on June 23, 2025 proposes changing this. It sets out a permissionless validator system in which any participant can register as a candidate by locking ETN as a warrant, with community support transactions influencing selection, a dynamic active set initially targeting 24 validators, epoch rotation every 17,280 blocks, warrant-weighted consensus voting, and slashing for validators that fail to propose or sign. It pairs that with an on-chain governance contract covering parameter changes, protocol upgrades, treasury allocation, and validator management, using proposal deposits, a discussion period, a 14 day vote, quorum and supermajority requirements, and a timelock before execution. The same document describes a temporary core team veto that would phase out as governance matures.
This is a proposal, not a description of the live network. Treat the permissionless validator system and on-chain governance as planned work and check current documentation for what has actually shipped.
At the time of writing, the block explorer host named in the project's developer resources was not accepting connections from multiple independent networks, so it is not linked here. Check the developer documentation for the current explorer endpoint before relying on it.
Electroneum is a rare case of a 2017 mobile-first token that neither disappeared nor stood still. Repository activity through late August 2026 on its Smart Chain client and its explorer and name service forks shows the project is under active development rather than in maintenance mode. Its trajectory is a useful record of what happens when a consumer-focused chain repeatedly re-architects itself while trying to keep an existing holder base intact.
ETN is listed on a number of centralized exchanges. Availability, pairs, and deposit or withdrawal support vary by exchange and jurisdiction, and support for the Smart Chain network specifically is worth confirming before transferring.
ETN is often available on:
Pairs are usually quoted against USDT or BTC where supported.
After purchase, ETN can be stored:
Add the network using chain ID 52014 and confirm the RPC endpoint from official developer documentation. If you still hold pre-2024 legacy chain ETN, migrate it before the January 31, 2027 deadline.
