Based is a self-custody trading application built on Hyperliquid. It is not a memecoin and not a blockchain. It is a front end and account layer over Hyperliquid's on-chain order books, packaged so that one app covers perpetual futures on crypto, equities, commodities, indices and currencies, plus prediction markets, plus a Visa card for spending balances. The company describes it as a financial superapp, which is its own framing rather than an independent assessment.
BASED is the app's token. It is issued as a LayerZero omnichain fungible token across Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and Hyperliquid's EVM, with a stated total supply fixed at 1,000,000,000. The Ethereum deployment sits at 0x4f2b33840227ddd0e28da8d4185d6fa07adfed87, created on January 8, 2026. The HyperEVM deployment is 0x053f6755320d06b8fd6675581b0475b2e32399b1 and the BNB Chain deployment is 0x1d28d989f9e3ccb8b15d0cec601734514f958e4d. The numeric suffix on this listing exists because several unrelated projects use the Based name, so the contract addresses are the reliable identifier.
Official sources:
Based does not publish a founder-led origin story on its main site, and no whitepaper is offered. What it does publish is a list of backers, naming Pantera Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Wintermute and Ethena.
The token's history is easier to date. Documentation places the token generation event on March 30, 2026, with community allocations from Seasons 1 and 2 unlocked at that point. Season 1 and 2 terms signing closed on February 8, 2026, and Season 3 ended on May 4, 2026 with distributions in May and June 2026 depending on when participants signed. The Ethereum contract deployment on January 8, 2026 is consistent with that timeline.
Self-custody accounts on Hyperliquid Trades settle on Hyperliquid rather than on an internal exchange ledger, and the user holds their own keys. Based supplies the interface, onboarding and account tooling.
Perpetual futures across asset classes Exposure to equities, commodities, indices and currencies is delivered as perpetual futures, not as ownership of shares or metal. That means funding payments and liquidation risk apply to a position in a stock index exactly as they do to a crypto position, and markets stay open around the clock including weekends. This is the single most important mechanical detail for a new user to understand.
Prediction markets The app routes prediction market access through Polymarket, covering politics, sports, crypto and other categories.
Spending and on-ramps Based Cash is a Visa card that spends balances at merchants, with cashback advertised in BASED. The app also supports funding from bank accounts and cards, and swaps on several external chains.
Omnichain token movement The BASED contract itself is the clearest evidence of how the token moves. Reading the deployments directly, each chain reports its own separate total, and those three totals add up to exactly 1,000,000,000. Tokens are burned on one chain and minted on another when they bridge, which conserves the global figure.
The documentation describes holding or staking BASED as unlocking:
The documentation's own wording is that these benefits are intended, which is appropriate hedging for a program that can change. The published allocation splits the supply into Genesis Distribution 36 percent, Ecosystem and Rewards 23.64 percent, Investors 20.36 percent and Core Contributors 20 percent, with both the investor and core contributor tranches subject to a one-year lock followed by a two-year unlock. Genesis covers community participants from Seasons 1, 2 and 3, plus an Ethena community allocation on a phased unlock.
Two things. First, the asset range. Being able to take leveraged exposure to Apple, gold, an index and Bitcoin from one self-custody account, with no brokerage and no market-hours gap on the crypto side, is unusual and is the app's central pitch. Second, the closed loop between trading and spending. Most trading applications stop at the withdrawal; Based adds a card so that a balance can be spent directly, with the token wired into fee tiers, card limits and cashback rather than into governance.
The token design is also worth noting for what it is not. BASED is a product loyalty and fee-discount token, not a claim on protocol revenue, and the documentation does not present it as one.
Against a decentralized exchange token, BASED does not govern an exchange. Hyperliquid provides the matching and settlement, and Based is an application layer on top. Against a centralized brokerage, the custody model is different and the instruments are perpetual futures rather than shares, which changes the risk profile substantially. Against other Hyperliquid-ecosystem front ends, the differentiators are the breadth of non-crypto markets, the card, and the seasons-based distribution that put tokens in the hands of early users.
Settlement security comes from Hyperliquid, and the user retains custody of their own keys rather than depositing into an exchange account. The BASED token's own security profile is more nuanced and deserves a direct statement.
Reading the contract, BASED exposes an owner-restricted mint and an owner-restricted burn, and the owner is a contract rather than an individual wallet, consistent with the omnichain bridge design that has to mint on arrival and burn on departure. There is no cap function in the contract. In other words, the 1,000,000,000 figure is an issuance policy that the bridge currently conserves, verifiably so at the time of writing, and not a hard ceiling enforced by the token code the way a fixed-supply contract with no mint path would enforce it. That is not a defect, because a bridged token needs mint and burn to work, but a reader comparing this token with a genuinely immutable fixed-supply contract should know the difference.
Based is a clear example of where on-chain trading is heading: not another exchange, but a consumer application that treats a decentralized order book as infrastructure and competes on product. Its combination of multi-asset perpetuals, prediction markets and a spending card in one self-custody app is a template several teams are now chasing, and it is a useful reference point for how far the Hyperliquid ecosystem has moved beyond crypto-only trading.
BASED trades on decentralized venues on Hyperliquid and on the other chains where it is deployed, and has been listed on a limited set of centralized exchanges. Availability changes, so check the official app and documentation for current venues rather than relying on a static list.
Centralized availability for BASED is narrower than for long-established assets and has varied since the token generation event. Confirm the current venue list through the official site before trading, and confirm the chain, since the same token exists on Ethereum, BNB Chain and Hyperliquid.
Because the token is omnichain, always confirm which deployment you are holding and bridge through the official route rather than a third-party contract.
