Ardor is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform, launched on 1 January 2018, that uses a parent chain and child chain design. The Ardor parent chain, secured by the ARDR token, provides consensus and security, while child chains such as Ignis carry their own tokens and business features like asset issuance, a decentralized exchange and voting. It matters as a long-running blockchain-as-a-service design from Jelurida, the team behind the earlier Nxt blockchain, built to reduce blockchain bloat and let businesses run customized chains without securing their own network.
Jelurida describes Ardor as "an open source multichain platform" with "a unique parent - child chain architecture. The security of the whole network is provided by the parent Ardor chain while the interoperable child chains have all the rich functionality."
Child chains are separate, customizable chains inside the Ardor network. Each has its own native token for value and transaction fees, and all child chains share the same code base, so their tokens can be traded against each other on a built-in decentralized coin exchange.

Ardor was developed by Jelurida, the company behind the Nxt blockchain. Jelurida Swiss SA is named in its whitepaper as the entity managing the Ardor and Ignis blockchains. According to the Jelurida whitepaper, Nxt developers began working on the Ardor protocol in the second quarter of 2016 to fix limits they saw in Nxt, especially the need to pay every fee in the NXT token.
Key milestones:
ARDR is the parent-chain token. Its roles are:
End users of child chains normally pay fees in the child-chain token, not in ARDR.
Ardor separates security from functionality. One chain and one token (ARDR) secure everything, while many child chains offer features and their own fee tokens. Bundling lets apps pay fees for users, and pruning addresses the long-term growth of chain data. The large set of built-in, non-Turing-complete features (assets, phasing, account control) lets teams build without writing smart contracts from scratch.
Compared with Ethereum, where most functionality is written as general-purpose smart contracts, Ardor provides ready-made transaction types. Waves and Lisk also targeted easy token issuance and application chains, and Komodo offers customizable independent chains. Ardor's distinguishing mechanism is that its child chains do not run their own consensus: they are secured by the shared ARDR parent chain.
Ardor uses what Jelurida calls a "100% proof-of-stake" consensus. ARDR holders forge blocks, either directly or by leasing their balance to a forging node. Forgers earn fees, not new coins. Periodic state-snapshot hashes included in blocks allow nodes to verify pruned child-chain data. Security therefore depends on how much ARDR is actively forging and how widely it is distributed.
Ardor is one of the oldest running examples of a multi-chain design where many chains share one security layer. Its focus on bundling, pruning and built-in features offers a different route from smart-contract-first platforms.
Jelurida's explorers and exchanges page lists crypto exchanges for ARDR, including Binance, Upbit, Bithumb, HTX, CoinEx and ProBit Exchange, plus swap services such as ChangeNOW and Changelly. Availability varies by region, so confirm the listing on the exchange itself.
The official Ardor wallet, available from Jelurida's downloads page for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, holds ARDR and child-chain tokens. A hosted web wallet is also available. Because ARDR runs on its own blockchain, it cannot be stored in Ethereum-only wallets. Keep your passphrase offline.
