Kinetiq is a liquid staking protocol built natively on Hyperliquid. Staking HYPE directly on Hyperliquid secures the network and earns rewards, but the staked position is locked and cannot be used elsewhere. Kinetiq removes that constraint: you deposit HYPE, receive kHYPE in return, and kHYPE remains freely transferable and usable across Hyperliquid's DeFi applications while the underlying HYPE keeps earning validator rewards.
KNTQ is the protocol's governance token. It gives holders a vote over protocol parameters, validator delegation policy, incentive programs and new product launches, and it is positioned as the instrument through which protocol revenue accrues to holders.
The distinction matters when reading about the project: kHYPE is the staking receipt asset, KNTQ is the governance and value-accrual asset. They are different tokens with different purposes.
Official sources:
Kinetiq is developed by Kinetiq Research. Magnus Lai has been publicly identified as co-founder and co-chief executive. The team raised a seed round of roughly $1.75 million toward the end of 2024, with Maven11 Capital among the named backers. No full public team roster has been published, so treat attributions beyond the named co-founder as unverified.
The kHYPE product launched in July 2025 and Kinetiq became the leading liquid staking venue in the Hyperliquid ecosystem. The KNTQ governance token followed, with its genesis event in late November 2025, distributed largely through an airdrop to users who had accumulated protocol points and to Hypurr NFT holders.
The protocol has three moving parts.
Deposit and mint A user deposits HYPE into the Kinetiq contracts and receives kHYPE. The protocol delegates the deposited HYPE to Hyperliquid validators on the user's behalf.
Reward accrual Validator rewards flow back into the pool, so each kHYPE becomes redeemable for progressively more HYPE over time. This is a value-accruing design rather than a rebasing one, so the balance in your wallet does not change while the redemption value does. That matters for tax treatment, accounting and how DeFi protocols price the asset.
Withdrawal Redemption is not instant. A user queues a withdrawal request and waits out a security delay before receiving HYPE back, which reflects the unbonding behavior of the underlying chain. In the meantime, secondary market liquidity is the faster exit, at whatever price the market offers.
The contracts run on HyperEVM, Hyperliquid's EVM execution environment, while the staking interacts with Hyperliquid's native staking layer. Bridging that split requires direct validator communication, batching and state synchronization across the two environments.
The pieces that make up Kinetiq are:
KNTQ is used for:
The maximum supply is fixed at one billion KNTQ. The published distribution allocates 30% to protocol growth and rewards, 25% to the initial airdrop (24% to holders of protocol points and 1% to Hypurr holders), 23.5% to core contributors, 10% to the Kinetiq Foundation, 7.5% to investors and 4% to liquidity. As with any distribution including contributor and investor allocations, the unlock schedule is worth reading in the official documentation.
The clearest differentiator is StakeHub. Most liquid staking protocols either delegate to a curated whitelist chosen by governance or split stake evenly. StakeHub instead scores validators on measured performance and reallocates delegation automatically, which is meant to raise yield and reduce the risk of stake concentrating behind an underperforming or misbehaving operator.
The second is that Kinetiq was built for Hyperliquid specifically rather than ported from another chain, so its contracts work with Hyperliquid's own staking mechanics rather than treating the chain as one deployment target among many.
Kinetiq is a protocol rather than a network, so the useful comparison is to other liquid staking providers.
Compared with Lido on Ethereum, Kinetiq addresses a single, much younger ecosystem and uses automated validator scoring rather than a governance-curated operator set.
Compared with Jito on Solana, both combine liquid staking with additional revenue capture, but Jito's extra revenue comes largely from block-building and MEV, while Kinetiq's is described in terms of validator commissions and market fees.
Compared with Rocket Pool, Kinetiq does not use a permissionless bonded node operator model; delegation is directed by the protocol's scoring system to existing Hyperliquid validators.
The general point is that Kinetiq's risk and reward profile is tied to one chain, which gives it focus and removes the diversification a multi-chain staking provider has.
Common uses include:
Security depends on:
Privileged roles are worth understanding before depositing. In liquid staking, upgrade authority and delegation authority are usually the real trust assumptions, not the consensus layer.
Key risks include:
Liquid staking is one of the first pieces of infrastructure a proof-of-stake ecosystem needs, because it decides whether staked capital sits idle or becomes usable collateral. Kinetiq occupies that position for Hyperliquid, which makes it a useful lens on how quickly a new chain develops financial depth and on whether automated validator selection outperforms governance-curated operator sets in practice.
KNTQ trades on Hyperliquid's own spot markets and on decentralized venues within the HyperEVM ecosystem, with some centralized listings as well. Availability varies by jurisdiction and platform, and support for HyperEVM deposits and withdrawals is not yet universal.
Listings for a recently launched token change often. Where KNTQ is available, it is typically found on venues such as:
Native trading also takes place on Hyperliquid itself. Verify current listings on the exchange rather than relying on a third-party list, and confirm which network a venue uses for deposits.
