Tranchess is a DeFi protocol that turns a single crypto fund into two products with different risk profiles: a steadier, yield-focused share and a leveraged share, both carved from the same pool of assets such as BTC, ETH or BNB. CHESS is its governance and utility token, which holders lock as veCHESS to vote, earn a share of protocol fees and boost their rewards. It matters as one of the longer-running experiments in bringing tranche-style structured products on-chain.
The Tranchess documentation describes the protocol as "a yield-enhancing asset tracker protocol with varied risk-return solutions". A main fund tracks an underlying asset, and each unit of the fund can be split into two sub-tranches:
Each QUEEN splits evenly into 0.5 BISHOP and 0.5 ROOK, and the two can be merged back.
The docs say the Tranchess concept was first conceived in early 2020. Its first funds ran on BNB Chain (BTCB, then ETH), with CHESS distribution beginning on June 24; the document gives no year for that date, but the next milestones on the same page are dated 2021 (CHESS staking rewards for the ETH fund from November 4, 2021, and for the BNB fund from January 13, 2022). Version 2 added instant swap pools and instant QUEEN creation and redemption, and later versions added ETH liquid staking and a staked-ETH yield product on Ethereum.
In a governance proposal titled "TranchessDAO #10 - Streamlining Product Offerings for Operation Optimization", the community backed retiring the qETH and eQUEEN funds, and the docs now include a product retirement tracker for that process. The individual founders are not named in the documentation reviewed for this page.
Deposit Users deposit an underlying asset through the Primary Market and receive QUEEN.
Split or hold QUEEN can be held, or split into BISHOP and ROOK. BISHOP holders receive a steadier return, while ROOK holders take on leveraged exposure to the underlying asset.
Rebalance The protocol periodically rebalances the tranches, and the docs publish a history of rebalance records. ROOK's leverage is described as roughly 1.7 to 2.2 times.
Staking yield In the BNB fund, the protocol stakes the underlying BNB with Tranchess's own validator on BNB Smart Chain, and the resulting "Alpha" rewards are shared between BISHOP and ROOK according to a weekly veCHESS vote. Staked-ETH products apply the same idea to Ethereum staking yield.
Swaps Built-in stable-swap pools let users move between BISHOP, ROOK and stablecoins without waiting for primary-market creation or redemption.
Contract addresses are published in the BNB Chain contracts list and Ethereum contracts list, and the core code is on GitHub.
According to the CHESS and veCHESS documentation:
The CHESS contract on BNB Chain is 0x20de22029ab63cf9A7Cf5fEB2b737Ca1eE4c82A6, and the docs list a separate Ethereum contract at 0xD6123271F980D966B00cA4FCa6C2c021f05e2E73. The listed cross-chain pool contracts suggest CHESS is bridged between networks, although the bridging design is not described in detail in the pages reviewed.
Most DeFi leverage products rely on borrowing and liquidation. Tranchess instead creates leverage by pairing two groups of users against the same fund: ROOK holders gain leverage because BISHOP holders accept a steadier return. Combining that structure with staking yield (on BNB and ETH) is a distinctive design choice.
Tranchess is an application, not a chain. Compared with Pendle, which splits yield-bearing assets into principal and yield tokens, Tranchess splits a fund into steady and leveraged tranches. Compared with liquid staking protocols such as Lido DAO or Lista DAO, Tranchess adds a tranche layer on top of staking yield. Compared with lending markets such as Venus, it offers leverage without liquidation calls.
Security depends on the underlying chains, the protocol's smart contracts, its oracles (time-weighted average price and APR oracles are listed among the contracts) and its validator operations for staking funds. The published contract lists include TimelockController contracts, a pattern that usually delays administrative changes so users can react. The documentation pages reviewed for this page do not link a specific audit report, so readers should look for audit information through the project's official channels.
Tranchess shows how traditional structured-product ideas can run as transparent, on-chain funds. Its path, from launch to multi-chain expansion to trimming products through governance, is also a useful case study in how mature DeFi protocols adjust their offerings.
CHESS trades on centralized and/or decentralized venues, with on-chain liquidity on BNB Chain decentralized exchanges. The Tranchess docs name Binance and PancakeSwap as places to obtain CHESS; availability can change, so confirm the listing and supported network on the exchange before depositing.
CHESS is a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain (with an Ethereum contract also listed), so it can be held in EVM wallets such as MetaMask, Trust Wallet or a hardware wallet like Ledger. Always add the token using the contract address from the official docs, and check it on BscScan.
