FIO Protocol is a blockchain-based usability layer for crypto that replaces long wallet addresses with human-readable FIO Handles (in the form name@domain) and adds features such as encrypted payment requests. It runs on its own delegated proof-of-stake chain, the FIO Chain. FIO is the native token, used to pay on-chain fees, stake, and vote for block producers and the FIO Foundation board. It matters because sending crypto to the wrong address or network is still a common and costly mistake, and FIO works across chains rather than inside one.
A FIO Handle is a single identifier that maps to a user's public addresses on many blockchains. A wallet that integrates FIO lets a sender type a Handle instead of pasting an address, and the wallet looks up the right address for the chosen token and chain. FIO Handles are also NFTs owned by the user.
The FIO website lists these main features:
According to the FIO token distribution page, a private company built the initial source code and sold that intellectual property to the non-profit FIO Foundation before mainnet launch; the Foundation then open-sourced it. The page states that the original IP creator "is no longer operational as a company," and that some of its former employees continue as independent contributors. It does not name the company.
The FIO Foundation is a Cayman Islands non-profit managed by a board of up to 9 members elected by FIO token holders. Its stated role is to support adoption, not to run or control the protocol. The token unlock schedule places day 90 after mainnet on June 23, 2020, which implies a mainnet launch around late March 2020 (an inference from that schedule).
The FIO Chain is a public delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) blockchain built on the open-source Antelope tech stack. Key mechanics:
Block producers Token holders vote for block producers, and the top 21 active producers are selected to produce blocks each round. Producers also set on-chain fees.
Bundled transactions Every FIO Handle comes with a bundle of gas-free transactions, so most users never need FIO tokens for routine actions like payment requests.
Predictable fees Premium actions are paid in FIO, with fees pegged to the FIO exchange rate for price predictability.
Auto-proxy If a user does not vote, their tokens are automatically proxied to the wallet provider that created the account, which votes on their behalf.
The token overview lists these uses:
Fee revenue is shared: 25% of every fee goes to staking rewards, 5% of every transaction goes to the Foundation, and wallets or apps that bring users (identified by a TPID) earn a share of fees.
Fixed token facts: maximum supply is 1,000,000,000 FIO. FIO was never sold in a public sale or ICO. About 64.87% was minted at mainnet for the Foundation, Handle giveaways, the IP creator's employees, investors and advisors, and early integrating wallets; 38,506,000 tokens allocated to wallets that did not finish integrating are permanently locked. The remaining 35.13% was reserved for minting over time. The Foundation reserve was exhausted in July 2023, and the block producer reserve has also been fully minted.
Most naming systems live on one chain and resolve mainly that chain's addresses. FIO is chain-agnostic: one Handle can point to addresses on any blockchain, and FIO Requests can carry payment details for any token, even Lightning invoices. Bundled free transactions and auto-proxy voting are designed so ordinary users never have to think about FIO tokens at all.
Ethereum Name Service, SPACE ID and Solana Name Service run as smart contracts on existing chains. FIO runs its own chain, which lets it offer gas-free bundles, encrypted payment requests and wallet-level integration, at the cost of needing its own validator set and token.
The FIO Chain is secured by independent block producers elected by token holders, with the top 21 producing blocks. The bridge relies on block producers acting as custodians and appointed oracles that observe both chains before minting or releasing assets. Code is open source on GitHub.
Address errors and chain confusion remain real barriers to everyday crypto use. FIO is one of the few attempts to fix them across all chains at once, through a shared identity and request layer that wallets plug into.
The FIO site's ecosystem list includes exchanges such as Kraken, Bybit, Gate.io and MEXC (confirm current FIO support with each), and WFIO trades on Uniswap on Ethereum and Base through official pools listed on the FIO site. Check that an exchange supports native FIO Chain withdrawals if you plan to use Handles or stake.
Native FIO can be held in wallets that integrate the FIO Chain, which the FIO site lists as including Edge Wallet and Trust Wallet, or managed through the FIO App. WFIO can be held in any Ethereum or Base wallet. Staked tokens never leave the holder's account, but they are locked while staked.
