DeGate today is a self-custody multichain crypto wallet. It combines swapping, sending, yield, and tokenized stocks into one app and one unified balance, and it handles routing, bridging, and gas in the background so the user never has to pre-fund a new chain. Private keys stay with the user, and DeGate states plainly that it cannot access them or move funds.
That is a different product from the one most older articles describe. DeGate was originally an order book decentralized exchange running on its own Ethereum ZK-rollup, and that exchange was sunset in June 2025. DG is the DeGate protocol token on Ethereum, carried over from the original protocol's governance. Anyone researching DG should read the current product and the token's origin as two related but separate things.
Official sources:
DeGate came out of the KEY GROUP orbit associated with Bin Lu, known in the Chinese-language crypto community as Gulu, whose earlier projects include the content platform Bihu and the smart wallet MYKEY. That lineage is visible in the token distribution, which set aside an allocation for a swap with KEY holders from those communities.
The product history is well documented by the project itself:
Order books, grid trading, and rollup deposits were all discontinued with the sunset. There is no DeGate rollup today.
The wallet's design rests on a single idea: you hold one key, and DeGate deterministically derives your addresses across supported chains from it. Only your signature can authorize a transaction from those addresses, which is what makes the product self-custodial rather than an exchange account.
On top of that sit three mechanics that do the heavy lifting:
Solver-based routing When you ask for a token on another chain, DeGate finds a route across integrated cross-chain protocols, shows the expected output and price impact, and executes it in one confirmation. Bridging is folded inside the swap rather than being a separate step you perform first.
Gas abstraction DeGate buys the gas tokens a route needs on the chains involved, for every account type except hardware wallets, which pay gas from their own address. The practical effect is that arriving on a new chain does not require acquiring its native token first.
USDC as the settlement unit Every swap has USDC on one side. USDC moves between supported chains one for one at no DeGate fee, and balances on one chain can be spent on another, which is what makes the single unified balance work in practice.
The features that make up the current product:
As documented, supported networks include Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Avalanche, Aptos, Bitcoin, Linea, Sonic, Worldchain, xLayer, HyperEVM, Monad, and MegaETH.
DG is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with a fixed total supply of 1,000,000,000, originally held entirely by DeGate's Home DAO. Its documented role is governance: DG holders can initiate and approve resolutions within the DAO framework, and that is how the community participates in decisions about the project's direction.
The published distribution allocates 44 percent to incentives, 20 percent to financing, 19.8 percent to founder financing vesting linearly over four years, 9 percent to business development, 5.2 percent to reserve, and 2 percent to a liquidity pool. Unvested founder tokens cannot be transferred but retain voting rights. Roughly 2 percent of supply was earmarked for a swap with KEY holders from the BIHU and MYKEY communities.
Two things are worth stating plainly. DG was designed around the original protocol, and DeGate's own documentation describes it as the protocol token that is part of that original governance. The current wallet does not require DG to use it: swaps settle in USDC, fees are charged in USDC terms, and gas is handled automatically. Readers should not assume DG is a fee, staking, or discount token for the wallet.
The interesting property is that DeGate keeps self-custody while removing almost every task that normally comes with it. A user does not choose a bridge, does not acquire a gas token, does not approve on two chains, and does not manage separate balances per network. Those steps still happen; they happen inside one confirmation, against addresses only the user's key controls.
The second unusual element is the breadth of what sits in one self-custody app: spot tokens, tokenized equities and index ETFs, yield vaults, and concentrated liquidity positions, all denominated in USDC. That mix is more typically split across a custodial exchange and several separate DeFi front ends.
The wallet's security model is custody plus dependency management. DeGate cannot read a user's private key or recovery phrase and cannot move funds from their addresses, because only a signature from that key can authorize a transfer, and there is no custodial account to freeze. Account types differ in how independent they are: a mnemonic wallet can be restored in any BIP39 or BIP44 compatible wallet with no dependency on DeGate, a hardware wallet keeps keys on the device, and email-based wallets rely on a wallet infrastructure partner for signing keys.
Beyond custody, risk sits with the protocols DeGate routes into. Simple Earn deposits carry the risk profile of the underlying vault, and Turbo Range positions carry the risks of the underlying concentrated liquidity pools. DeGate publishes audit reports for the current product, including a third-party audit of the Solana liquidity handler, and runs a bug bounty. The older Trail of Bits and Least Authority reports cover the discontinued DEX and are not an audit of the wallet.
DeGate is a useful case study in what self-custody has to become to compete with an exchange account. The team ran a cryptographically enforced rollup exchange, concluded that the experience was not winning, and rebuilt around abstraction instead: same custody guarantee, far fewer steps. Whether or not the token follows, the product is a clear statement of where non-custodial crypto interfaces are heading.
DG is an Ethereum ERC-20 token, and observable liquidity is concentrated on Ethereum decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap rather than on major centralized platforms. Anyone buying on-chain should verify the contract address independently, since ticker symbols are not unique across projects.
DG has minimal centralized exchange coverage compared with larger assets, and listings have changed over the project's life. We do not list specific venues here because naming one that has since delisted DG would be worse than naming none. Check current availability directly on the exchange you use, and note that any pair you do find is likely to be thinner and wider than for a widely listed token.
Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction and can be withdrawn at short notice.
DG can be stored:
Always confirm you are on Ethereum mainnet and that the contract address matches the official one before depositing or withdrawing.
