CrossFi is a Layer 1 blockchain and payments project that combines a Cosmos-based chain with an Ethereum-compatible (EVM) layer, and builds consumer products on top, including a Web3 banking app and a crypto payment card. XFI is the utility coin of CrossFi Chain, used across its apps and for fees on the EVM side. The project's pitch is making crypto usable for everyday spending, which puts it at the meeting point of blockchain infrastructure and fintech.
CrossFi describes itself as providing "Web3 banking tools for the fastest and instant use of crypto every day." Its stack has two layers: CrossFi Chain, which runs smart contracts and validators, and a set of products for end users, such as the CrossFi App (a non-custodial account), the CrossFi Card for spending crypto at card merchants, the xApp DeFi interface, and the xUSD stablecoin. The official site is crossfi.org.
The chain uses two native coins: XFI, the utility coin, and MPX (Mint Power), which is staked to produce new XFI and used for governance.
Founders are not named on the official pages reviewed for this article. The site lists CrossFi Cain s.r.o. in Prague, Czech Republic, and an office in Hong Kong, and names team members including Fedor Bogorodsky (Banking Director), Leo Kahn (CMO) and Ryan Horn (Global Development Strategy Advisor).
Milestones from the project's About page:
Cosmos layer Built on Tendermint and the Cosmos SDK, this layer handles consensus, block production and verification, and new coin emission. Fees on this side are paid in MPX.
EVM layer Based on Ethermint and Evmos code, this layer runs Solidity smart contracts and lets Ethereum tools such as MetaMask connect. Base fees on the EVM side are paid in XFI and burned.
Consensus The chain uses delegated proof of stake. MPX holders stake with validators and earn newly minted XFI.
Applications The App, Card, xApp and bridge sit on top, letting users move XFI, xUSD and USDT between CrossFi Chain and other EVM chains.
XFI has a maximum emission of 378,432,000 coins over 20 years (2023 to 2043). Block rewards step down every four years: 5 XFI per block in years 1 to 4 (126,144,000 XFI), then 4, 3, 2 and 1 XFI per block in the following four-year periods.
XFI is used to:
MPX had an initial issuance of 4 billion with unlimited emission afterwards, and MPX holders can propose and vote on chain changes.
The two-coin model separates a staking and governance asset (MPX) from a fixed-emission utility coin (XFI), with MPX staking as the channel through which new XFI is minted. CrossFi also ships its own payment card and banking app, so the chain is paired with a consumer spending product rather than relying only on outside dapps.
Many chains combine the Cosmos SDK with an EVM, including Evmos, Kava, Cronos and Injective, so the architecture itself is not unusual. The differences are CrossFi's two-coin economics and its focus on card payments and banking features. Compared with crypto card issuers such as Wirex, CrossFi runs its own Layer 1 underneath the card product.
Security comes from delegated proof of stake on the Cosmos layer, with validators and delegators staking MPX. The project cites a Cyberscope KYC certification and PCI DSS certification for card handling, and publishes a legal opinion and license on its documents page. Smart contracts on the EVM layer carry the usual contract risk.
Getting crypto into everyday payments is one of the industry's long-running goals. CrossFi is one of the projects trying to connect a Layer 1 chain directly to card spending and banking tools, which makes it a useful case to follow in the crypto payments category.
The official site links to XFI trading on MEXC, HTX, PancakeSwap and Uniswap. XFI also exists natively on CrossFi Chain and as a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain, so confirm which network a venue uses before depositing.
According to the project's About page, XFI listed on MEXC in May 2023 and on HTX in August 2023. Check each exchange for current availability in your region.
Native XFI and MPX can be managed through the XFI Console and the CrossFi App. EVM-compatible wallets such as MetaMask can connect to the CrossFi Chain EVM layer, and BEP-20 XFI can be held in any BNB Chain wallet.
