Nexo is a centralized digital asset platform offering crypto-backed credit lines, interest-bearing accounts, an exchange, and a Mastercard-linked card. NEXO is its native ERC-20 token, and its function is access rather than settlement: the share of NEXO in your portfolio sets your tier in the Nexo Loyalty Program, which determines your borrowing rate, yield rate, and card cashback.
Official resources:
Nexo launched in 2018, co-founded by Antoni Trenchev and Kosta Kantchev, with Kalin Metodiev and Georgi Shulev also in the founding group; Shulev left in 2019. It grew out of Credissimo, a European consumer lending fintech Kantchev co-founded. The token was sold across March and April 2018 with a fixed supply of one billion.
The regulatory history is material. In January 2023, Nexo agreed to pay $45 million split between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and parallel state actions, settling charges over its Earn Interest Product; it had exited the U.S. market in December 2022. Bulgarian authorities searched its Sofia offices that January and dropped proceedings later that year. Nexo relaunched in the U.S. in February 2026 using regulated partners, including Bakkt.
Nexo operates as a custodian: users deposit crypto or fiat, and it lends against those balances or deploys them for yield. The Instant Crypto Credit Line lets a user pledge assets as collateral and draw a loan without selling, with a loan-to-value ratio per asset and liquidation if it is breached.
The token sits across both products, since holding NEXO raises your Loyalty tier, lowering credit line interest and raising deposit yield. Nexo has also run open-market repurchase programs, including $100 million announced in November 2021 and $50 million more in August 2022.
The Loyalty Program has four tiers: Base, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, set by the share of NEXO in your portfolio balance across savings and credit wallets. Silver requires at least 1% NEXO, Gold at least 5%, and Platinum at least 10%. Higher tiers reduce credit line interest, increase deposit yield and exchange cashback, raise card rewards, and add free crypto withdrawals.
The structural point is that this utility is contractual, not protocol-enforced: rates, thresholds, and benefits are set by Nexo and can be changed by Nexo.
Nexo operated continuously through the 2022 credit cycle that removed most of its direct peers, including Celsius, BlockFi, and Voyager, without pausing withdrawals. Its overcollateralized model avoids the unsecured borrower exposure that sank them.
Exchange tokens such as OKB, Bitget Token, KuCoin Token, and GateToken mostly deliver fee discounts and periodic burns. NEXO has a fixed supply that is never burned; the company repurchases on the open market instead. Against decentralized lenders like Aave, the difference is custody: collateral is held off-chain and users rely on corporate solvency rather than smart contract logic.
Borrowing against crypto holdings without triggering a sale. Earning yield on idle balances. Spending against collateral through the Nexo Card. Qualifying for better platform terms by holding NEXO.
As an ERC-20 token, NEXO inherits Ethereum's security for transfers and self-custody, with representations also tracked on Polygon, Fantom, and Energi. Platform security is separate, resting on custody arrangements, insurance, collateral thresholds, and automated liquidation. Holding NEXO in a Nexo account for tier purposes means accepting custody risk too.
The token's value depends on one company continuing to operate and to offer the current benefits, which are revisable at its discretion. Regulatory history matters: the January 2023 settlement concerned its Earn Interest Product, and some data providers still categorize the token as an alleged security. Custodial risk applies to anything left on the platform, and loans can be liquidated in fast drawdowns.
Nexo is one of the few centralized crypto credit businesses from the 2018 cohort still operating at scale, and its survival through 2022 says something real about overcollateralized lending. It is also a clear example of a loyalty-style asset, where value accrues from product terms rather than network fees.
NEXO trades on major centralized exchanges and on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. It can also be bought inside the Nexo platform, which is how most users accumulate it for tier purposes, since the tier calculation counts only tokens held in Nexo wallets.
Any Ethereum-compatible wallet holds NEXO, and a hardware wallet is stronger for long-term holdings. Note the trade-off specific to this token: self-custodied tokens do not count toward your Loyalty tier, so holders who want the benefits must keep them in a Nexo account.
