The Sandbox is a voxel based virtual world where users create 3D assets and games, own virtual land as NFTs, and publish experiences other players can visit. It calls itself "a community-driven platform where creators can monetize voxel ASSETS and gaming experiences on the blockchain," built around a map of 166,464 LAND parcels. SAND is its utility token, an ERC-20 asset with a finite supply of three billion, used for purchases and marketplace activity. The project is owned by Animoca Brands.
Official resources:
The Sandbox started as a mobile game. Its documentation states that "Pixowl launched The Sandbox Game in 2012 as a 2D pixel art game built to empower creators to share their content," which went on to pass 40 million downloads. Pixowl was co founded by Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget, now chief executive and chief operating officer of The Sandbox, and the documentation records that Animoca Brands acquired the team in mid 2018 to launch a 3D version. SAND reached public markets through a Binance Launchpad sale in 2020.
Three products form the loop. VoxEdit is a free voxel modelling tool, the Marketplace is where those creations, called ASSETs, are sold as tokens, and Game Maker lets anyone assemble ASSETs into playable experiences without code. LAND parcels are ERC-721 NFTs on a 408 by 408 grid, which is where the total of 166,464 comes from, and they can be grouped into ESTATES or rented. Because Ethereum fees make in world activity expensive, much of the economy runs on Polygon.
SAND is documented as the basis of transactions across the ecosystem: players spend it on ASSETs, equipment and access, creators spend it to acquire ASSETs and LAND, and it settles marketplace sales. The 2020 whitepaper also describes DAO governance and a fee model funding a staking pool and the Foundation. One change matters for anyone reading older material: official documentation states that staking rewards ended in June 2025, so staking should be treated as discontinued.
The Sandbox has real game development history behind it. The tools are approachable, the creator economy is built for people who do not code, and its partnership roster brought recognizable entertainment IP on chain early.
Decentraland is the closest comparison, with a similar land and governance structure but a different visual style. Axie Infinity focuses on a single game economy, Gala publishes a portfolio of games instead of one shared world, and Enjin Coin targets the token layer for game items. The Sandbox competes on tooling and IP.
SAND is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with deployments on Polygon and Base, so security comes from those networks, and LAND and ASSETs are NFT contracts with source published on GitHub. Accounts and reward distribution are operated by the company, so those layers and the bridges add risk the chains do not carry.
Metaverse platforms depend on sustained engagement, and activity here has been cyclical. The end of staking removes a yield source that supported holding SAND, and much of the economy relies on brand partnerships and company funded seasons. There is regulatory history too: the SEC's June 2023 complaint against Coinbase named SAND among tokens it alleged were unregistered securities, and that case was dismissed with prejudice in February 2025. Classification remains unsettled in some jurisdictions.
The Sandbox is one of the few metaverse projects with real creation tools, a working marketplace and a decade of game development behind it. It set the template many later virtual worlds copied: parcels as NFTs, free creator software, and a token that settles activity in world.
SAND is listed on most large centralized exchanges and trades on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum, Polygon and Base. Confirm which network deployment you are buying and match the contract address to the official links above. Review SAND markets on CoinRithm to compare venues.
SAND works with any wallet supporting ERC-20 tokens on the relevant network, including MetaMask, Rabby and hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor. If you plan to use the platform, a browser wallet connected to Polygon is the practical setup. Keep long term holdings on hardware and use a separate wallet for marketplace interactions.
