Starknet is a permissionless Layer 2 validity rollup that scales Ethereum using STARK proofs. Transactions execute off-chain in Starknet's own virtual machine, a proof shows the execution was correct, and Ethereum verifies that proof instead of re-executing the work. Contracts are written in Cairo, a language built for provable computation. STRK is the native token, used for fees, staking and governance.

Starknet was built by StarkWare, founded in 2018 in Israel by Eli Ben-Sasson, Michael Riabzev, Uri Kolodny and Alessandro Chiesa. Ben-Sasson is chief executive and a co-author of the original STARK research. StarkWare's earlier StarkEx was a validity rollup for specific applications, and Starknet generalized it into a public network whose alpha reached mainnet in late 2021. The Starknet Foundation, an independent nonprofit, launched holding roughly half the initial token supply, and STRK entered circulation through the Provisions program in February 2024.
A sequencer collects and orders transactions into blocks, and execution happens in the Starknet VM using Cairo. Proofs are aggregated through SHARP, StarkWare's shared prover, which proves that running the Starknet OS program over a block's transactions produces a valid state transition, then compresses multiple blocks into one artifact verified on Ethereum. Compressed state diffs are posted to Ethereum for data availability, and correctness is settled by proof rather than by a challenge window.
STRK pays transaction fees, secures the network through staking, and carries governance rights. Validators must stake at least 20,000 STRK and run a full node, and their main duty in the current phase is block attestation, submitting an attest transaction for an assigned block each epoch. Rewards are paid per epoch on an all-or-nothing basis, so a validator that misses its attestation earns nothing, and unstaking triggers a seven-day lockup. Delegators can stake through a validator without running infrastructure. Bitcoin holders can delegate wrapped BTC and earn STRK rewards, with BTC weighted at 25 percent in validator power. STRK has a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens.
It uses STARKs rather than SNARKs, so there is no trusted setup ceremony and proof security rests on hash functions, giving post-quantum properties pairing-based systems lack. It also runs a custom VM and language rather than being EVM-equivalent, and has pushed Bitcoin integration further than most Layer 2s.
Arbitrum and Optimism are optimistic rollups relying on a challenge period, which slows withdrawal finality but allows near-complete EVM equivalence. ZKsync, Linea and Scroll are validity rollups using SNARK-family proofs and targeting EVM compatibility, so Solidity contracts port with less friction, whereas Starknet asks developers to learn Cairo.
Correctness comes from the proof system, since every state transition must carry a STARK proof that Ethereum verifies, so a sequencer cannot publish invalid state. Liveness is still being decentralized: sequencing has been operated centrally, and the staking roadmap moves validators from attesting blocks, to proposing them, to full decentralized consensus.
Sequencer decentralization is unfinished, so censorship resistance and liveness depend on a small operator set even though correctness does not. Cairo raises the developer barrier and limits reuse of Ethereum tooling and audited Solidity code, slowing ecosystem growth. Rollup contracts on Ethereum are typically upgradeable, so admin key arrangements are a real risk surface, and staked STRK is locked for seven days.
Starknet is the largest production deployment of STARK proofs, which avoid trusted setup and hold up against quantum attack in ways most deployed systems do not. Its prover work and Cairo toolchain feed into how verifiable computation gets built more broadly, and its Bitcoin work aims to give BTC programmable functionality without a custodian.
STRK is listed on most major centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Starknet, Ethereum and Solana. Since it exists on several networks, buy on the one you intend to use it on and verify contract addresses through official documentation.
To use STRK on Starknet itself, including for fees and staking, a Starknet-native wallet such as Argent or Braavos is required, both supporting Ledger devices. STRK held on Ethereum can sit in any ERC-20 wallet, and the Solana deployment needs a Solana wallet.
