Filecoin is a peer-to-peer network that turns data storage into an open market. Clients pay storage providers to keep their files, providers must submit continuous cryptographic proofs that the data is still held as agreed, and providers post FIL as collateral that is slashed if they fail those proofs. Pricing is set by the market rather than by a single company. FIL is the network's native token, used for storage payments, provider collateral and transaction fees.
Official resources:
Filecoin was created by Protocol Labs, the research and development organisation founded by Juan Benet, which also created the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) in 2014. The Filecoin whitepaper was published in 2017 and the project raised funds through a token sale the same year, which is why Filecoin appears in lists of assets US regulators have at times described as securities.
Mainnet launched in October 2020. The Filecoin Virtual Machine arrived in 2023, adding programmability to a network that had previously done one thing. In late 2025 the ecosystem introduced Filecoin Onchain Cloud, an effort to package verifiable storage, retrieval and payments as developer-facing services.
Storage providers seal client data into sectors and generate a Proof-of-Replication (PoRep), which shows they created a unique physical copy rather than pointing at someone else's. They then post Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt) proofs on an ongoing basis: Window PoSt regularly re-verifies stored sectors, while Winning PoSt is produced by the provider elected to make a block.
Consensus is Expected Consensus, a probabilistic Byzantine-fault-tolerant design in which the chance of being elected leader is proportional to a provider's committed storage power. Blocks at the same height are grouped into tipsets, and nodes follow the heaviest chain.
FIL pays for storage and retrieval deals and for gas on the Filecoin chain. Storage providers lock FIL as pledge collateral before they can commit sectors, and that collateral is at risk if they fail their proofs. Block rewards are paid in FIL and vest over time rather than unlocking immediately, which ties provider earnings to continued good behaviour.
Filecoin's distinguishing feature is verifiable physical storage. Rather than trusting a provider's claim, the protocol requires proofs that a unique copy exists and continues to exist, enforced by collateral.
Arweave targets permanent storage paid for once up front, while Filecoin uses time-bounded, renewable deals with market pricing. Storj and Siacoin also build decentralized storage markets but do not use storage power as the basis of chain consensus.
Typical uses include archival and backup of large datasets, scientific and public-interest data preservation, storing NFT and media assets with verifiable persistence, and serving as the durability layer beneath applications that use IPFS for addressing.
Security rests on the combination of proofs and collateral. A provider cannot fake stored data because PoRep and PoSt are expensive to forge, and cannot quietly drop data because missed proofs trigger slashing. Consensus weight follows committed and proven storage, so attacking the chain requires acquiring and proving a large share of network capacity.
Filecoin's economics are capital-intensive for providers, and pledge collateral requirements can constrain how fast the network grows. Committed capacity is not the same as useful stored data, and the share of capacity used for real client deals is a persistent point of scrutiny. Regulatory characterisation of FIL in some jurisdictions remains unsettled.
Filecoin is the largest attempt to build a market for verifiable storage rather than for a promise of storage, and it is the reference implementation of the idea that hardware contribution can be proven on-chain and paid for automatically.
FIL is listed on most major centralized exchanges and trades on some decentralized venues, including on FVM-based and bridged markets. Confirm a venue supports withdrawals to the Filecoin network before buying.
FIL can be held in wallets that support the Filecoin address format, including Ledger hardware wallets, Glif and other ecosystem wallets. Exchange custody removes direct access to storage deals.
