MegaETH is an Ethereum layer 2 rollup built on the OP Stack and tuned for very low latency execution. Its sequencer emits mini-blocks roughly every 10 milliseconds and packages them into full EVM blocks about once per second, which is the basis for the project's "real-time blockchain" framing. Block data is published to EigenDA for availability and batched to Ethereum for settlement. MEGA is the protocol token, used for sequencer staking, proximity market access and a milestone-based reward program, while gas is denominated in ETH as on other OP Stack chains.

MegaETH is developed by MegaLabs, founded in 2023. Its co-founders are commonly identified as Yilong Li, Lei Yang and Shuyao Kong, and MegaETH publishes research under Shuyao's name on its own site. The company does not publish a consolidated funding page, so reporting on its venture and token sale rounds should be treated as secondary rather than confirmed.
Mainnet went live in February 2026 after a public testnet period. The token generation event followed a KPI trigger rather than a fixed date: the first threshold, ten applications from the MegaMafia builder cohort deployed on the network, was crossed on 23 April 2026, and MEGA went live one week later on 30 April 2026.
A transaction is submitted to an RPC endpoint, which validates and forwards it to the sequencer. The sequencer orders and executes it into a mini-block within about 10 milliseconds. Mini-blocks stream to geographically distributed RPC nodes, so results are queryable almost immediately. Full EVM blocks then bundle the mini-blocks, post data to EigenDA and batch to Ethereum for settlement.
Block production runs through a single sequencer with standby nodes designed to take over within tens of milliseconds. Two node types serve reads: replica nodes sync state without re-executing, and full nodes re-execute blocks to verify state transitions independently.
Fee accounting differs from Ethereum. MegaETH uses a multidimensional gas model. Compute gas matches Ethereum EVM costs, while storage gas is charged separately for operations creating persistent data such as state writes, account creation, contract deployment and event logging, and is zero for most other operations. Every transaction carries an intrinsic 60,000 gas, made up of 21,000 compute and 39,000 storage. Because storage gas depends on dynamic chain state, the docs instruct developers to estimate against a MegaETH RPC endpoint, since standard Ethereum tooling will underestimate cost.
MEGA is described by the project as the native token powering the MegaETH protocol. Its documented roles are KPI rewards, where over half of supply is reserved for milestone-based distribution released to holders who commit MEGA through Flux when targets across reliability, performance, adoption and decentralization are met; sequencer rotation, where operators are intended to stake MEGA to run sequencing across regions with selection by stake and performance and faults slashed; proximity markets, where participants lock MEGA for tiered colocation near the sequencer with top seats auctioned; and governance, where a later phase has holders voting on which KPI milestones apply.
Published allocation is 53 percent KPI rewards, 15 percent community, 15 percent venture investors, 10 percent team and advisors, and 7 percent foundation and ecosystem reserve. Sequencer rotation is a stated plan rather than the current operating state, and gas is paid in ETH, not MEGA.
Two things stand out. The first is latency. Most rollups optimize throughput and cost while accepting sub-second to multi-second confirmation; MegaETH restructures block production around mini-blocks so execution results reach users on roughly the timescale of a web request, which is what makes order books, games and other latency-sensitive applications viable on-chain. The second is the launch design: a KPI-triggered generation event with most supply released only against measurable milestones is an unusual departure from calendar-based unlocks.
Against Arbitrum and Optimism, MegaETH is a more specialized machine, accepting a single high-performance sequencer and pushing optimization hard where the larger rollups prioritized ecosystem breadth and, for Optimism, a shared Superchain standard. Against ZKsync and Linea, MegaETH is optimistic at base, using Kailua for zero-knowledge fraud proofs on dispute rather than proving every block. It also departs from most OP Stack chains by using EigenDA rather than Ethereum blobs for data availability, and by adding a storage gas dimension.
MegaETH inherits settlement security from Ethereum. Blocks are batched to L1, and disputes over state transitions are resolved through Kailua, which produces a single zero-knowledge proof rather than requiring interactive bisection. EigenDA provides data availability so third parties can reconstruct state and detect sequencer misbehavior, and full nodes re-execute blocks for independent verification. The important qualifier is that block production is currently centralized in one sequencer with standby failover; the staked, rotating sequencer model is a plan, not the present configuration.
If latency is what keeps certain application categories off-chain, MegaETH is the clearest test of whether removing that constraint actually produces them. It is also a real experiment in launch design, since tying most token supply to measured network milestones rather than a vesting calendar is a mechanism others will watch, and whether those KPIs prove meaningful or gameable will be informative either way.
MEGA trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized venues within the MegaETH ecosystem. Confirm which network a venue uses for deposits and withdrawals before moving funds, and note that you will need ETH on MegaETH to pay gas for any on-chain activity.
MEGA is a standard ERC-20 token on MegaETH, so any Ethereum-compatible wallet configured with a MegaETH RPC endpoint can hold it, including hardware wallets used through a software front end. MegaETH also publishes its own wallet, MOSS, and an ecosystem hub. For long-term holdings, a hardware wallet with keys held offline is safer than leaving balances on an exchange.
