What Is Monad (MON)?

Monad is a layer 1 blockchain fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine at the bytecode level, with the client software beneath it re engineered for much higher throughput. Existing Solidity contracts, addresses, tooling and Ethereum JSON-RPC calls work without modification, but blocks are produced in a few hundred milliseconds and transactions inside a block execute in parallel. MON is the native asset, used for gas, staking and governance. Mainnet went live on 24 November 2025.

Who Founded Monad? (History)

Monad was founded in 2022 by Keone Hon, James Hunsaker and Eunice Giarta, who came from high frequency trading and low latency systems backgrounds, with Hon previously at Jump Trading. The development company originally operated as Monad Labs and now trades as Category Labs, while the Monad Foundation stewards the network. It raised a large venture round led by Paradigm, and a public token sale and community distribution preceded mainnet.

How Monad Works

Monad's performance comes from four changes to how an EVM chain is built rather than from changing the EVM itself. Consensus uses MonadBFT, a pipelined Byzantine fault tolerant protocol producing blocks on a sub second cadence. Execution is asynchronous: consensus orders transactions first and execution follows behind, giving it a larger time budget than a design where both must finish in one block interval.

Within a block, transactions execute optimistically in parallel, and the client re executes only those that touched the same state, so the result matches serial execution. State lives in MonadDB, which stores Ethereum's trie directly on disk rather than through a general purpose key value store, and block propagation uses an erasure coded protocol called RaptorCast so validators can run on ordinary hardware.

Key Ecosystem Components

The main components are the two open source clients, one for consensus and one for execution, MonadDB, the RaptorCast propagation layer, the validator set, and the standard Ethereum toolchain. At launch the ecosystem included established Ethereum protocols alongside Monad native projects.

MON Token Utility

MON pays gas for all transactions and contract execution. Validators stake MON to participate in consensus, holders can delegate and share rewards, and MON carries governance weight over protocol parameters. Genesis supply was one hundred billion MON, with block rewards adding ongoing issuance split among stakers.

What Makes Monad Unique?

The distinguishing claim is that no compromise on compatibility was required to get the performance. Where many high throughput chains ask developers to adopt a new virtual machine or account model, Monad kept bytecode level EVM equivalence and pushed all the change into consensus, scheduling, storage and networking. That is why established Ethereum protocols were live within days of mainnet.

How Monad Differs from Similar Projects

Sei also pursues a parallelised EVM but arrived from a Cosmos base and is consolidating toward an EVM only stack. Solana achieves parallelism through a different runtime and account model, so Ethereum contracts do not port directly, and Berachain differentiates through proof of liquidity rather than execution speed. Ethereum rollups inherit Ethereum security, whereas Monad must bootstrap its own.

Use Cases of Monad

The design targets applications where latency and cost matter: on-chain order books and perpetual futures, high frequency trading, payments, games, and consumer applications that would be uneconomic at Ethereum mainnet fees.

How Monad Is Secured

Monad uses proof of stake with MonadBFT, so safety depends on honest control of a supermajority of staked MON and on how widely stake is distributed. The protocol targets consumer grade hardware and reports a validator count in the hundreds, so participation is meant to stay open. Both clients are open source and have been externally audited.

Risks and Considerations

Monad is a young network. Sub second finality, parallel execution and a custom database are each sources of implementation complexity, and complex clients have longer bug tails. Most MON supply was not circulating at launch, with allocations vesting over years, so unlocks are structural and block rewards add issuance. The chain competes with well funded rivals for the same developers and liquidity, and early activity on new chains is often incentive driven.

Why Monad Matters

Monad tests a specific proposition: that Ethereum's execution environment was never the bottleneck, and that the same contracts run far faster if the client software beneath them is rebuilt. If that holds under sustained load, it removes the porting cost that usually accompanies a move to a faster chain.

MON is listed on a broad set of centralised exchanges following its mainnet launch and public sale, and trades on decentralised exchanges on Monad itself. Availability varies by jurisdiction.

Storage Options After Purchase

Because Monad uses Ethereum addresses and standard RPC, MON can be held in ordinary EVM wallets configured for the network, and in hardware wallets supporting custom EVM chains. Verify network configuration before sending, since the same address exists on many chains and funds sent to the wrong one are generally unrecoverable.
