Yearn is a decentralized finance protocol that automates yield generation. Its central product is the yVault, a capital pool that routes deposits into yield strategies across DeFi, socializing gas costs and rebalancing so depositors need not manage positions. YFI is its governance token.
Official resources:
Yearn grew out of iearn, a lending aggregator built by Andre Cronje, and YFI was created to decentralize management of those products. Distribution began in July 2020; YIP-1 and YIP-2 are both dated July 19, 2020 and authored by Cronje.
The launch is a DeFi reference point because there was no founder allocation, investor round or pre-sale. Per Yearn's docs, 30,000 tokens went proportionally to liquidity providers of the Curve yPool and two Balancer pools over about seven days. Governance later minted 6,666 more under YIP-57, bringing total supply to 36,666.
A yVault accepts a single asset and allocates it to one or more strategies. In version 3, strategies are themselves standalone ERC-4626 vaults, called Tokenized Strategies, usable directly or plugged into a multi-strategy vault. Version 2 vaults still run Curve pools. Two fees are possible: a performance fee deducted from yield at harvest, and a management fee minted as new shares. After YIP-69 fees became dynamic, and single-asset vaults usually carry none.
YFI's role has been repeatedly redefined by holders, and the docs state that all of its functions can be modified by the community at any time. Governance is the constant: holders vote on Yearn Improvement Proposals and, under Governance 2.0, on delegation and signaling votes. Staking now centers on stYFI, which earns rewards while keeping governance rights, and stYFIx, a passive option that delegates voting power. Rewards come as yvUSDC.
The launch remains genuinely unusual: no premine, no founder allocation and no venture round, with the entire initial supply going to users who supplied liquidity over about a week. Beyond that, Yearn's distinguishing trait is durability through self-reinvention, having moved through three vault architectures and two staking systems by public vote.
Against lending markets, the distinction is what the user buys: a lending protocol offers a rate in one venue, a Yearn vault a managed allocation across many, so the depositor buys management rather than a rate. Against vote-escrow protocols, Yearn sits on both sides, building liquid lockers on other systems while running its own staking, and its docs are clear that liquid locker tokens cannot be redeemed for the underlying.
Yearn publishes its security process, disclosures and audit reports publicly, with bounties for valid findings. The v3 core contracts were audited by StateMind, ChainSecurity and yAudit, and the v2 and factory contracts by MixBytes, ChainSecurity and Trail of Bits. The docs are also candid about the central trust assumption, stating that Yearn "hinges on the critical assumption that the Governance role is honest," a role held by a six-of-nine multisig deliberately left outside a timelock.
Smart contract risk applies to the vault, to every strategy inside it and to every external protocol a strategy touches, so a vault's real attack surface is wider than its own code.
Governance risk is stated plainly: the multisig holding that role is critical and is not behind a timelock. Product risks vary too, with the yvUSD docs listing bridging, depeg, duration and liquidation risk, and warning that withdrawals may not be atomic.
Yearn helped define what a yield aggregator is. The vault pattern it popularized in 2020 has been reimplemented on nearly every chain, and its use of ERC-4626 pushed that standard into wide adoption.
YFI is listed on most large centralized exchanges and trades on Ethereum decentralized exchanges, where the canonical contract is 0x0bc529c00C6401aEF6D220BE8C6Ea1667F6Ad93e. Bridged versions exist elsewhere, and because total supply is small, most venues support fractional purchases. Verify the contract against Yearn's docs, since a bridged YFI is a different token.
YFI is an ERC-20 token, so any Ethereum wallet can hold it. For meaningful balances, a hardware wallet keeps signing keys offline while still allowing use of Yearn's applications. Staking moves the tokens into a contract, unwinding involves a 14-day cooldown, and keeping YFI on an exchange means you cannot vote.
