Solana Name Service, usually shortened to SNS, is the naming layer for Solana. It maps human-readable .sol names to on-chain data, most commonly a wallet address, but also text records, IPFS content identifiers, images, social handles and website configuration. It is the largest naming service on that chain.
FIDA is the project's original token, issued in December 2020 when the project was called Bonfida. One point needs stating up front, because it is the most misunderstood fact about this asset: in May 2025 the project launched a second, separate token called SNS, and did so because it judged FIDA's economics unsustainable. FIDA was not renamed or converted into SNS. It remains a distinct SPL token with its own mint, and its documented role in the current product is narrow.
Official sources:
The project began as Bonfida, founded by computer engineer David Ratiney around 2020, and became one of the most active infrastructure teams of the early Solana ecosystem. Bonfida built order book tooling used by the Serum decentralized exchange, including an asset-agnostic order book engine, plus a perpetual swap product, alongside the .sol naming service. FIDA was distributed in December 2020 with a one billion unit issuance.
The Serum and FTX collapse removed much of that surrounding ecosystem. Bonfida changed leadership, narrowed its focus to naming and identity, and formally rebranded to Solana Name Service in July 2024. In May 2025 the new team launched the SNS token with a stated total supply of ten billion, opening a Genesis Airdrop claim on May 13, 2025 that ran for ninety days. Forty percent of SNS supply was earmarked for the community, of which 1.5 billion went to roughly 275,000 wallets holding at least one .sol domain at snapshot and 500 million to other Solana communities and partners, a group that explicitly included FIDA holders. The legacy bonfida.org site still resolves but serves pre-rebrand content; the current authoritative sources are sns.id and its documentation.
The name registry Each .sol name is an account in an on-chain registry program. Ownership is held by a Solana account, and the name resolves to whatever data the owner writes into it.
Records and resolution A domain carries records, now on a version 2 format, holding addresses for other chains, social handles, IPFS content and similar data. Direct lookup resolves a name to an address; reverse lookup resolves an address back to its primary name, which is what lets wallets display a readable name instead of a public key.
Subdomains and registrars Domains can issue subdomains, and a community-owned subdomain registrar program lets a domain owner run registration for their own namespace.
Tokenization A .sol domain can be wrapped into an NFT so it trades through standard Solana NFT infrastructure, and unwrapped back into a plain registry entry.
Web resolution The sol.site service extends a .sol domain to conventional web browsing and email configuration.
Registration is priced in United States dollars and paid in the token of the buyer's choice or by card. The documented schedule is $750 for one-character names, $700 for two, $640 for three, $160 for four and $20 for five or more, charged as the equivalent value in the selected token.
This is where accuracy matters most. The current documented utility of FIDA in the SNS product is a single, specific benefit: domains registered with FIDA receive a five percent discount on the purchase price. FIDA is also accepted as one of the payment tokens at checkout.
Beyond that, FIDA's role is historical. The project stated that FIDA's tokenomics could no longer provide the alignment or incentive model that .sol domain holders required, which was the stated reason for launching SNS as a separate community token. Governance, emissions and community incentives have moved to SNS.
On supply, a live read of the FIDA mint EchesyfXePKdLtoiZSL8pBe8Myagyy8ZRqsACNCFGnvp shows six decimals, a null mint authority and a null freeze authority. The null mint authority is meaningful: no further FIDA can ever be created, by the team or anyone else. The issued quantity sits below the one billion originally distributed, consistent with historical burning. The separate SNS token mint SNS8DJbHc34nKySHVhLGMUUE72ho6igvJaxtq9T3cX3 similarly shows a revoked mint authority against its ten billion issuance.
SNS is unusual among naming services in how far it pushed past address resolution. Domains are tokenizable, so they trade with normal NFT liquidity rather than through a bespoke marketplace. Subdomain registrars let communities run their own namespaces without the core team. The sol.site layer gives a .sol name a working web and email presence, a genuine bridge to conventional internet use rather than a slogan about one. The project is also unusual for having survived the collapse of its original business context, which most Serum-era Solana infrastructure did not.
Compared with Ethereum Name Service, the closest analogue, SNS prices registrations in dollar terms across a character-length tier table rather than charging annual renewals the same way, and it is built on Solana's account model rather than on Ethereum contracts. Compared with Sui Name Service and similar chain-native registries, SNS has a far longer operating history and a larger installed base of names and wallet integrations. The sharpest difference is token structure: Ethereum Name Service governs through a single token, while SNS now has two, a legacy token with a discount role and a newer community token carrying the incentive design. Do not assume the FIDA ticker represents the project's governance asset, because it does not.
Registry security comes from Solana itself. Name records are ordinary on-chain accounts protected by Solana's proof-of-stake consensus and by program-level ownership checks, so control of a domain follows control of its owning account or its wrapped NFT. At the token level, the revoked mint authority on FIDA removes issuer dilution risk entirely. The project runs a public bug bounty and publishes its registrar, records and SDK code openly on GitHub, where those repositories continued to receive commits through September 2026. SNS also reserves certain domains to protect well-known names from impersonation.
Readable names are one of the few genuinely consumer-facing primitives in crypto. Sending funds to a name instead of a forty-four character public key removes an entire class of user error, and a portable name is the natural anchor for reputation, profile data and cross-application identity. SNS is the default implementation of that primitive on one of the most active chains. Its recent history is instructive on its own terms: it is one of the clearest public examples of a project concluding that its original token design had failed and replacing it rather than pretending otherwise.
FIDA trades on Solana decentralized exchanges and on a number of centralized venues. Verify the mint address EchesyfXePKdLtoiZSL8pBe8Myagyy8ZRqsACNCFGnvp before trading on-chain, and take particular care not to confuse FIDA with the separate SNS token, since both belong to the same project and brand.
FIDA has a long listing history dating back to its 2020 distribution, though availability varies by venue and jurisdiction and some exchanges adjusted their listings around the rebrand. Confirm the asset and the Solana deposit network on the exchange's own page.
If you also own .sol domains, keep the wallet holding them separate from your routine transaction wallet, since a domain is only as secure as the key that controls it.
