Pump.fun is a Solana platform where anyone can create a token in a few clicks and trade it immediately on a bonding curve, with no liquidity to seed. Coins that fill their curve migrate automatically to PumpSwap, the platform's own automated market maker. PUMP is the platform token, sold in July 2025 and tied to a buyback and burn program funded by platform fees rather than to governance rights.
Official resources:
Pump.fun launched on January 19, 2024 and is credited to three founders: Alon Cohen, Noah Tweedale, and Dylan Kerler. Cohen is the public-facing cofounder, while the other two keep a low profile and the company says little about its structure. PumpSwap launched in March 2025, the PUMP sale ran on July 12, 2025, and the platform later bought the wallet tracker Kolscan, the trading terminal Padre, rebranded as Terminal, and the cross-chain terminal Vyper.
Each new coin is minted with six decimals and a fixed supply of one billion units, of which roughly 793 million sit on the bonding curve. Pricing uses a Uniswap V2 style constant-product formula against synthetic reserves, so a coin trades from creation with no liquidity provider. When the curve completes, liquidity migrates into a PumpSwap pool and the LP tokens received are burned. Since September 2025, protocol and creator fees follow tiers keyed to each coin's on-chain valuation, so newer coins pay their creators more and larger ones taper down.
PUMP has a fixed supply of one trillion tokens and no inflation. Its link to the business is the buyback: in April 2026 the company burned the PUMP accumulated over the prior nine months and locked half of net revenue from the bonding curve, PumpSwap, and Terminal into an irreversible contract that buys and burns PUMP for a year. Before that, effectively all revenue went into buybacks. The documentation does not describe PUMP as a governance or fee-discount token.
The instant-launch curve removed the two hardest steps in issuing a token, writing a contract and funding liquidity, cutting a launch down to a name and an image. It then extended across the whole lifecycle, from creation to curve trading to its own AMM and terminal, so it earns fees at every stage rather than only at listing.
Raydium, Meteora, and Jupiter added launchpads to exchanges they already ran, while Pump.fun started from issuance and built its exchange after. Orca is an AMM with no launch product. Virtuals Protocol runs a similar flow but targets AI agent tokens, whereas Pump.fun stays neutral about what a coin is for.
The programs sit at fixed Solana mainnet addresses with open IDLs and SDKs, so anyone can audit the fee math, the curve, and the migration path. Burning LP tokens at migration is structural protection, since it stops the pool's initial liquidity from being pulled. That covers the platform, not the coins launched on it, which are unvetted by design.
The core risk is the asset class. Most coins launched here are memecoins with no revenue and a high failure rate, and a curve that never completes leaves thin liquidity. Platform revenue is cyclical and depends on speculative volume, which directly affects the buyback. That buyback is a one-year commitment covering half of net revenue, not a permanent policy, and PUMP confers no governance or claim on assets. Regulatory friction is documented: the platform blocked UK users in December 2024 after an FCA warning, and a US class action followed in January 2025.
Pump.fun turned token issuance into a consumer product and became one of the highest-fee applications in crypto. It is also the clearest live experiment in linking an application's cash flow to a token through open-market buybacks, a reference point well beyond memecoins.
PUMP trades on Solana decentralized exchanges, including PumpSwap and aggregators, and on centralized exchanges that listed it after the July 2025 sale. Because Solana hosts many tokens with similar names, confirm the mint address from an official source or explorer before swapping on-chain.
PUMP is a Solana token, so any Solana wallet works, including Phantom, Solflare, and Backpack. For larger balances a hardware wallet such as Ledger pairs with those interfaces to keep keys offline. Holding on an exchange means trusting that venue's custody.
