ORDI is the first token created under BRC-20, an experimental fungible token standard living inside Bitcoin transactions. It is a JSON text inscription written onto a satoshi using the Ordinals protocol, with rules set by one deploy rather than a smart contract. The deploy is publicly verifiable: inscription 348020, in Bitcoin block 779832 on March 8, 2023, reads {"p":"brc-20","op":"deploy","tick":"ordi","max":"21000000","lim":"1000"}, fixing the ticker, a supply of 21,000,000 and a per-mint limit of 1,000.
Official resources:
ORDI has no company, website or official social account. It is a ticker on an open standard, unusual at its size.
BRC-20 was created by a pseudonymous developer known as domo, who published it in March 2023 and deployed ordi as its first ticker. domo has never been publicly identified, and the documentation calls BRC-20 a fun experimental standard, discourages financial decisions based on it and invites better designs.
The layer beneath has a named author: Casey Rodarmor, a former Bitcoin Core contributor, released Ordinals and the ord client in January 2023. BRC-20 followed from the realization that if you can inscribe arbitrary content, you can inscribe a ledger's instructions.
Ordinal theory numbers every satoshi in mining order, then tracks it through transactions with a first-in, first-out rule over inputs. Inscriptions attach content to a satoshi through a commit and reveal pair, inside an OP_FALSE OP_IF ... OP_ENDIF envelope in a taproot script-path spend. The network treats that envelope as a no-op, so data is stored on-chain without changing script behavior.
BRC-20 layers three JSON operations on top. Deploy creates a ticker with a maximum supply and optional mint limit. Mint claims an amount within those rules, credited to the inscription's first owner. Transfer moves balance in two steps: the inscription is created, then sent. None of it is enforced by Bitcoin consensus. Off-chain indexers read every inscription, identify valid BRC-20 JSON and compute balances.
ORDI has no protocol utility. It does not pay fees, secure a network, grant governance rights or entitle holders to revenue. Its fixed supply of 21,000,000 mirrors Bitcoin's own cap and was distributed through open public minting, with no team, treasury or investor allocation. Its role is as a traded asset and the reference implementation of BRC-20.
It is genuinely first, the deploy that proved fungible tokens could be expressed through Bitcoin inscriptions. Distribution is unusually clean, with no premine, insider allocation or vesting, because there was no team. Its parameters are immutable, since the rules sit in a transaction that cannot be upgraded.
Ethereum meme tokens run on smart contracts where balances are enforced by consensus. BRC-20 balances rest only on indexer agreement, a weaker guarantee. Against Runes, a later Rodarmor standard using the UTXO model more efficiently, BRC-20 is costly and inscription-heavy, and unlike Bitcoin layer-two systems it adds no execution environment.
Settlement security is Bitcoin's: every inscription and transfer is a transaction confirmed by proof-of-work, and the deploy parameters are immutable. Accounting is weaker, since consensus does not validate BRC-20 rules and correct balances depend on indexers agreeing.
The indexer dependency is the central structural risk, with no equivalent in contract-based tokens. Handling errors are costly, since inscribed satoshis sent from an ordinals-unaware wallet can be lost. There is no team, treasury or roadmap, so nothing will be improved or defended. Fee spikes make transfers expensive, activity is cyclical, and bridged versions carry their issuer's risk.
ORDI marks the point where Bitcoin stopped being only a payment ledger in practice. Whatever one thinks of BRC-20 as engineering, the deploy in block 779832 set off a wave of block space demand, new wallets and better standards.
ORDI is listed on several major centralized exchanges and trades on Bitcoin inscription marketplaces. An exchange avoids inscription handling, but self-custody needs an ordinals-aware wallet. Check the markets list here, and distinguish native BRC-20 ORDI from bridged versions.
Use a wallet that explicitly supports Ordinals and BRC-20, such as Xverse or UniSat, or a hardware wallet paired with ordinals-aware software. Standard Bitcoin wallets do not track inscribed satoshis and may spend them as change, losing the balance.
