Kaia is an EVM compatible Layer 1 blockchain formed by merging two Asian enterprise chains: Klaytn, built on the foundation of Kakao in 2019, and Finschia, successor to the LINE Blockchain started in 2018. The merged network launched on August 29, 2024 and is operated by the Kaia DLT Foundation, incorporated in Abu Dhabi Global Market. Its documentation describes it as "a highly optimized, BFT-based public blockchain" built for enterprise grade reliability. The strategic distinction is distribution through messenger super apps.
Official resources:
Kaia has no individual founders. It is the product of two corporate programs: Klaytn, developed by Kakao subsidiary Ground X, and Finschia, the successor to LINE Blockchain. In 2024 the Klaytn Foundation and the Finschia DLT Foundation merged into the Kaia DLT Foundation. FNSA converted to KAIA at roughly 148 to 1, while KLAY was rebranded one for one.
Kaia runs an optimized Istanbul BFT, described in the documentation as Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance "with modifications to suit the characteristics of blockchain networks." Validators exchange messages and agree before a block commits, so blocks cannot be reorganized. The documentation states mainnet performance as 4,000 transactions per second, one second blocks, immediate finality and over 50 consensus nodes, with gas at roughly one tenth of Ethereum. The account model also supports fee delegation, letting a service pay transaction fees for its users.
The Kaia Governance Council is the validator body. The Ecosystem Fund and Infrastructure Fund receive fixed shares of block rewards. The NEXT WEB SDK, bundling the Kaia Wallet SDK and the LINE LIFF API, is how developers build Mini dApps that launch inside the LINE messenger.
KAIA is the native coin, paying transaction fees and contract execution costs. It is staked by Governance Council members, who must meet a minimum of five million KAIA to operate as validators. It carries governance weight, with voting power proportional to staked and delegated KAIA and an upper limit to prevent one entity dominating. The white paper sets an initial annual inflation target of 5.2 percent, with block rewards split 50 percent to validators and community, 25 percent to the Ecosystem Fund and 25 percent to the Infrastructure Fund.
Distribution is the differentiator. Most Layer 1 networks acquire users one wallet at a time, while Kaia inherits relationships with two messaging platforms reaching very large audiences in Asia and ships tooling for apps that open inside a chat app. With fee delegation, this aims to make on-chain apps feel like ordinary messenger features.
WEMIX is the closest comparison, another Korean origin Layer 1 tied to a large domestic company, though WEMIX is gaming led while Kaia is broader. Hedera shares the model of established organizations governing a public network but uses hashgraph consensus. Algorand offers instant finality without a comparable consumer channel, and against Avalanche or NEAR Protocol, Kaia competes on regional reach rather than a new programming model.
The primary use case is consumer applications delivered as Mini dApps inside messengers, including games, loyalty programs and collectibles for users who have never held a wallet. It also supports the usual EVM set of decentralized exchanges, lending and stablecoin transfers.
Security comes from BFT consensus among Governance Council validators. Because agreement is reached before commitment, blocks are final immediately. Participation is gated by a substantial minimum stake, voting power is capped so no single member can dictate outcomes, and proposals are discussed publicly before on-chain voting.
The validator set is a council of corporations rather than a permissionless set, a real centralization trade-off, and the five million KAIA minimum is a meaningful barrier to entry. The consumer strategy depends on messenger platforms Kaia does not control, a commercial arrangement rather than a protocol guarantee. Inflation is ongoing with no hard supply cap, so holders are diluted unless demand grows, and a regionally concentrated user base is more exposed to Korean and Japanese regulatory change.
Kaia is one of the more serious attempts to solve blockchain's distribution problem rather than its throughput problem, and a rare case of two established chains genuinely merging rather than competing.
KAIA trades on international exchanges including Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget and MEXC, and on Korean venues such as Bithumb, Coinone and GoPax where KRW pairs are available. Withdrawals go to a Kaia network address, which uses EVM style formatting.
Kaia is EVM compatible, so standard Ethereum wallets work once the network is added, and the documentation publishes a MetaMask guide and RPC endpoints. Kaia Wallet integrates most directly with Mini dApps. Hardware wallets supporting EVM chains keep keys offline, and staking is done by delegating to a council member from your own wallet.
