What Is Fluid (FLUID)?

Fluid is a DeFi protocol built around a shared Liquidity Layer, a single contract that holds funds while lending, borrowing and trading protocols are built on top of it. Rather than each application attracting its own deposits, its lending market, vaults and exchange draw on the same pool. It was built by the team behind Instadapp, and FLUID is its governance token, converted one to one from the earlier INST. The protocol runs on Ethereum and has been extended to Arbitrum, Base and Polygon.

Who Founded Fluid? (History)

Fluid's documentation states it is built by the same team that built Instadapp. Instadapp began as a hackathon project: a governance forum thread recounts that the original interface won a prize at ETHIndia in 2018, and credits Sowmay Jain, Samyak Jain and Satish Nampally as the early team. A December 2024 proposal migrated INST to FLUID one to one, keeping the same contract address and 100,000,000 supply.

How Fluid Works

The Liquidity Layer is the foundation. It holds all user funds and only interacts with the protocols built on it, removing the fragmentation of every application running its own pool.

The lending protocol is the simplest consumer: users deposit and receive ERC-4626 fTokens that accrue yield. The vault protocol handles borrowing with a single-collateral, single-debt structure, supporting loan-to-value ratios up to 95 percent. The DEX protocol adds smart collateral, where a liquidity position earns fees while serving as collateral, and smart debt, where a borrowed position provides exchange liquidity and earns fees against the debt.

FLUID Token Utility

FLUID is a governance token with a total supply of 100,000,000. Holders and delegates vote on market listings, network expansion, borrow capacity, rates, and treasury spending.

The December 2024 proposal also introduced an algorithmic buyback program, to activate after Fluid reaches 10 million dollars in annualized revenue. Bought-back tokens sit in the treasury, and governance decides whether to burn or distribute them.

What Makes Fluid Unique?

Smart debt is the idea with no close equivalent elsewhere. In a conventional money market, borrowed funds sit idle until deployed. In Fluid, a borrowed position can act as liquidity inside the protocol's exchange and earn fees, offsetting borrowing cost.

How Fluid Differs from Similar Projects

Aave and Compound are pooled lending markets without an exchange, so an LP position and a loan live in separate protocols. Uniswap is an exchange without a lending market. Morpho layers curated markets on lending infrastructure without merging trading into it. Fluid puts one pool underneath everything, a stronger capital efficiency claim and a tighter coupling of risks.

Use Cases of Fluid

• Depositing stablecoins or ETH into the lending protocol for yield through fTokens.
• Borrowing against collateral at high loan-to-value with low liquidation penalties.
• Providing liquidity on Fluid DEX while that position backs a loan.

How Fluid Is Secured

Fluid publishes audits covering the major components: PeckShield pre-launch, StateMind, MixBytes on the vault protocol and Liquidity Layer, and Cantina on the DEX. The admin module separates governance, auth and guardian roles, with authorization contracts gating parameters such as rates and limits.

Risks and Considerations

• Concentration is the structural trade-off. The Liquidity Layer holds funds for every protocol on Fluid, so a flaw there has a wider blast radius than one in an isolated market.
• High loan-to-value borrowing leaves a thin buffer before liquidation.
• Listing risk has materialized. A May 2026 governance post-mortem records roughly 21 million dollars in bad debt from an exploit at Resolv, whose asset Fluid had listed. Resolv covered part of it, the treasury absorbed roughly 8.2 million, and the team the rest.
• Smart collateral and smart debt carry impermanent loss on top of lending risk.
• Oracle dependence applies to collateral valuation and liquidation triggers.

Why Fluid Matters

Fluid is a serious attempt to collapse the boundary between money markets and exchanges rather than layering one on the other. If smart debt works at scale, borrowing costs fall structurally, because debt stops being idle capital.

Where Can You Buy Fluid (FLUID)?

FLUID trades on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum, including Fluid's own DEX, on supported layer-2 networks, and on centralized venues. Because the token kept the original INST contract address, verify that address before trading.

Storage Options After Purchase

FLUID is an ERC-20 token, so any Ethereum-compatible wallet can hold it, with a hardware wallet suited to long-term holdings. Governance is signed from the holding address, so if you plan to vote, avoid leaving the token on an exchange.
