What Is GEODNET (GEOD)?

GEODNET, short for Global Earth Observation Decentralized Network, is a decentralized network of GNSS reference stations streaming real-time correction data to nearby devices. Standard satellite positioning is accurate to a few meters, while a receiver near a GEODNET station can resolve its position to within centimeters using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) techniques. Operators install a certified rooftop antenna, register it on the project console, and earn GEOD for delivering verified data.

Who Founded GEODNET? (History)

The technical paper, published in the Institute of Navigation journal NAVIGATION in 2023, lists Mike Horton, David Chen, Yudan Yi, Xiaohua Wen and James Doebbler as authors. The about page names Horton as project creator, citing over twenty years in navigation and a prior company, Crossbow Technology, sold to Moog. Chen is Head of Blockchain and Yi is Head of GNSS. Coordination sits with the GEODNET Foundation, a Singapore non-profit.

How GEODNET Works

A permanent station is called a Base Station, or Satellite Miner. Certified hardware must carry a calibrated triple-band antenna, track at least three of the four major constellations, and hold a device key in secure storage. Devices consuming corrections, called rovers, connect over standard protocols such as NTRIP, so existing equipment works unmodified within roughly 20 to 40 kilometers of a station.

GEOD Token Utility

GEOD rewards station operators, pays for RTK data service, and carries governance weight. Rewards accrue on effective online time, with base rates halving annually on June 30, and dual-band stations were retired from rewards in June 2025. Governance weight, expressed as veNFT, is drawn from Location NFTs, staked GEOD and locked team and investor GEOD, each weighted at roughly a third. Total supply is one billion, issued on Polygon, on Solana via Wormhole NTT, and on IoTeX.

What Makes GEODNET Unique?

Rewards are anchored in physics rather than self-reported activity. A station cannot fake its position without simultaneously defeating hardware certification, secure key storage, timing challenges and cross-checks against neighbors. GEODNET's site also states that 80 percent of data revenue buys back and burns GEOD, tying supply reduction to paid usage.

How GEODNET Differs from Similar Projects

The technical paper explicitly contrasts the design with Helium's proof-of-coverage scheme: GEODNET validates location and measurement accuracy instead, because it sells a precise geodetic observation rather than radio reach. Unlike mapping networks using moving vehicles, its stations are fixed and continuously operating, which makes them survey-grade references.

How GEODNET Is Secured

Hardware designs and manufacturers are approved by GeoDAO, after which the manufacturer issues a root X.509 certificate and each device receives a unique signed key pair. The private key stays inside the device and authenticates all traffic, blocking relayed or simulated data. Proof of Location adds a pseudorandom timing challenge, while Proof of Accuracy penalizes multipath and positional instability.

Risks and Considerations

Mining requires buying and installing hardware, so returns depend on placement, uptime, hex competition and NFT status rather than on holding tokens. Base rewards halve annually. The burn depends on actual data revenue, so it scales with adoption rather than being guaranteed. Operating across three chains adds bridge risk, and incumbent providers hold long-standing enterprise relationships.

Why GEODNET Matters

Centimeter positioning has historically been sold as an expensive regional subscription, leaving much of the world with poor coverage. Token incentives change who funds the buildout. As autonomous machines spread, affordable correction coverage becomes a real bottleneck.

Where Can You Buy GEODNET (GEOD)?

The documentation lists Gate and MEXC among centralized venues, QuickSwap and Uniswap on Polygon, and Orca, Raydium and Jupiter on Solana. Confirm the contract address in the official documentation before swapping.

Storage Options After Purchase

On Polygon, GEOD is a standard ERC-20 and works with any EVM wallet once the contract address is added, including hardware wallets. On Solana it is an SPL token. Payouts go to the wallet registered in the Console, so that must be an address whose keys you control.
