EURC is a euro-denominated stablecoin issued by Circle, designed to hold a value of one euro per token and to be redeemable one for one for euros. Circle states that it is backed entirely by euro reserves held at regulated financial institutions in the European Economic Area, with monthly third-party attestations. Circle lists it on Avalanche, Base, Ethereum, Solana, Stellar and World Chain, and in the European Union it is issued as a regulated e-money token under the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation.
Official resources:
EURC is a product of Circle, the company behind USDC, rather than the work of an independent founding team. Circle announced it on June 16, 2022 as Euro Coin with the ticker EUROC, and issuance began on Ethereum on June 30, 2022. Circle later retired that branding in favor of EURC, updating the symbol on the existing contracts rather than launching a new asset. On July 1, 2024, Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS received an electronic money institution license from the French regulator ACPR.
EURC is a full-reserve token rather than an algorithmic or crypto-collateralized one. Qualified businesses use Circle Mint to convert euros into EURC by wire and to redeem back into euros, and Circle states redemption is always available one for one. Reserves sit in euro accounts at regulated EEA institutions, separately from Circle's operating funds. Circle earns the interest; holders receive no yield.
EURC is a settlement asset. It gives traders a euro quote pair without a bank rail, lets businesses move euro value across borders and across chains at blockchain settlement speed, and gives DeFi users a euro unit for liquidity pools, lending and payments. It carries no governance rights, no staking function and no claim on Circle beyond the redemption right in its terms.
EURC is the largest euro-referenced stablecoin, and its main distinction is the regulatory footing behind it. It is issued by a company that is publicly listed in the United States and authorized as an electronic money institution in France, and it was among the first stablecoins brought into MiCA compliance.
Most stablecoin liquidity is dollar-denominated, so EURC's closest peers are other non-dollar tokens such as EURI and tokenized pound offerings, which are smaller and listed on fewer venues. Against dollar stablecoins the difference is the reference currency and where reserves sit: EURC reserves are euro deposits at EEA institutions.
Euro-based businesses use EURC for cross-border payments and treasury movement without correspondent banking delays. Traders use it as a euro quote pair and to shift between euro and crypto exposure without an off-ramp. DeFi users supply it to euro liquidity pools.
Security here is mostly institutional rather than cryptographic. The value of EURC depends on Circle holding sufficient euro reserves and honoring redemptions. Circle publishes monthly attestations and weekly reserve holdings, and the French e-money authorization brings EEA issuance under rules covering reserve segregation and redemption rights.
EURC concentrates risk in one issuer and one banking network. If reserve institutions failed or reserve assets became unavailable, the peg would be exposed regardless of how the token behaves on-chain. Attestations are not full audits and describe a point in time. Holders receive no share of the interest Circle earns on reserves. Circle's stablecoin contracts are commonly described as including controls that let the issuer freeze balances at specific addresses. Euro liquidity is also much thinner than dollar liquidity, so large trades can move the price away from parity even when reserves are sound.
Nearly all stablecoin activity is dollar-denominated, which exports dollar exposure to every user who touches on-chain settlement. EURC is the most established attempt to give the euro an equivalent on-chain presence, and it shows what regulated stablecoin issuance looks like in Europe.
EURC trades on centralized exchanges including Coinbase Exchange, Kraken, OKX, HTX, Bitstamp, CEX.IO and Bit2Me. On-chain it is available through Uniswap on Ethereum, Base and Avalanche, Aerodrome and Balancer on Base, and Orca, Meteora and Raydium on Solana.
EURC can be held in any wallet that supports the relevant network: an EVM wallet for Ethereum, Base, Avalanche and World Chain, a Solana wallet for the SPL version, and a Stellar wallet with the correct trustline. Hardware wallets suit larger balances. Before transferring between chains, confirm the native contract address.
