Aerodrome Finance is a decentralized exchange and liquidity marketplace on Base, the Ethereum layer 2 incubated by Coinbase. It pairs an automated market maker with a vote escrow model, so participants who lock the AERO token decide which pools receive newly issued AERO each week. It went live in August 2023 and is built on the codebase used by Velodrome Finance on Optimism, which descends from the Solidly design. AERO is the protocol's emissions and governance asset.
Official resources:
Aerodrome was launched in August 2023 by the team behind Velodrome Finance, whose studio is commonly described as Dromos Labs, alongside Base ecosystem contributors. There was no conventional public sale. Much of the initial AERO supply went out as locked veAERO positions to Velodrome lockers and to partner projects that committed liquidity at launch.
Trading runs through stable pools for assets expected to trade near parity, volatile pools for uncorrelated assets, and Slipstream pools, added in 2024, which offer concentrated liquidity within a chosen price range. Providers stake their pool position in a gauge to earn AERO emissions.
Emissions are allocated by vote. Users lock AERO for up to four years and receive veAERO as a transferable NFT. Each seven day epoch, running from Thursday at 00:00 UTC, veAERO holders vote for the gauges they want funded, and voting weight sets each pool's share. Voters in turn receive the trading fees from the pools they backed, plus any external incentives projects attach to those gauges. Lockers also receive a rebase intended to limit dilution from ongoing issuance.
AERO is the reward paid to liquidity providers staking in gauges, the asset locked to obtain veAERO and its voting power, and through veAERO the claim on protocol revenue, since fees and incentives flow to the voters who backed a pool. Emissions follow a schedule that grows for an initial period then decays, with longer term issuance intended to pass under veAERO control.
Liquidity is something projects bid for rather than something the protocol allocates by committee. A team wanting depth can lock AERO and vote for its own pool, or post incentives that make voting for it attractive to others. That turns emissions into a market.
Against Uniswap, more value goes to lockers rather than staying with passive liquidity providers, and emissions are permanent by design. Against Curve, the mechanics are similar in spirit, but Aerodrome's lock produces a transferable NFT and epochs are uniform and weekly. The closest comparison is Velodrome, which shares the codebase and team but serves Optimism, so the two differ mainly by chain.
Settlement guarantees come from Base and, through Base, from Ethereum. Contract security rests on the audited Velodrome V2 lineage, published source code and a bug bounty programme. The protocol is non custodial, so the main risks are contract bugs and governance capture, not custodian failure.
AERO is inflationary by design, so holders who do not lock are diluted. Vote escrow concentrates influence in large lockers, and four year locks are illiquid unless the veAERO NFT is sold. Incentive markets can push emissions toward pools with little organic volume. The protocol depends on Base staying healthy, including its sequencer and bridges. Concentrated liquidity positions can suffer meaningful impermanent loss when prices leave the chosen range.
Aerodrome is a clear working example of the vote escrow model applied to a single chain. For Base it functions as core financial infrastructure, since much of the network's onchain liquidity and routing passes through it.
AERO trades on Aerodrome itself and on other Base decentralized exchanges and aggregators, and is listed on a number of centralized exchanges. Availability differs by region and venue.
AERO is an ERC-20 token on Base, so wallets such as MetaMask, Rabby and Coinbase Wallet work, and Ledger or Trezor hardware wallets add key isolation. Leaving tokens on an exchange means the exchange holds the keys. Locking AERO produces a veAERO NFT that must stay in the wallet used to vote.

Aerodrome's new mechanism rewards liquidity providers for predicting future demand, replacing backward-looking incentives with a prediction market approach.

The concept, called Predictive Allocation, will encourage participants to anticipate where liquidity will be needed next, instead of rewarding them for directing incentives toward pools that have already generated fees.
