Venice Token (VVV) is the token behind Venice, a generative AI platform serving text, image, video, and audio models through a chat interface and an OpenAI-compatible API, with privacy as its stated design priority. VVV is a staking asset, not a payment token: staking it entitles the holder to a share of Venice's inference capacity without per-request fees, a claim on compute rather than a prepaid balance. It launched January 27, 2025 on Base, and since August 2025 that claim is tokenized as DIEM.
Official resources:
Venice was founded by Erik Voorhees, also founder of the exchange ShapeShift. The platform launched in May 2024 and the token followed in January 2025. Its positioning follows Voorhees's stated concern that mainstream providers retain every message. Venice is a company, not a DAO, so it is run by its team rather than by token holders.
The mechanism has three layers. A holder stakes VVV and receives sVVV, a receipt for the staked position. That sVVV is locked at the current mint rate to mint DIEM, where each staked DIEM grants one dollar per day of Venice credit, refreshed at 00:00 UTC. The mint rate rises as supply grows.
Venice retired an earlier pro-rata utilization split on August 20, 2025 and tokenized the compute itself, so a DIEM allowance no longer dilutes as usage grows. DIEM is transferable, letting a holder sell compute without selling the VVV principal. Unstaking DIEM has a one-day cooldown; freeing the VVV behind minted DIEM means burning it first, then waiting seven days.
VVV had a genesis supply of 100,000,000 tokens: 50% airdropped to Venice users and crypto AI projects on Base, 35% retained by Venice (10% team, 25% treasury), 10% to incentives, 5% to liquidity. Emissions start at 14 million per year, an initial 14% rate that declines over time, paid to stakers.
Staking activates the compute claim: an unstaked VVV token earns no inference allowance and no emissions. This is a genuine work-token model, where value tracks demand for a service rather than protocol fees, and it confers no governance rights.
Most AI tokens pay for compute per request or govern a network. VVV does neither. It is a perpetual, non-expiring, pro-rata claim on a company's inference capacity, and DIEM makes that claim transferable, so compute becomes a separate asset.
Bittensor coordinates a decentralized network of model subnets and rewards miners and validators, so TAO is a network incentive token. Akash Network and io.net are marketplaces where the token buys third-party hardware, and the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance merges agent and data infrastructure. Venice differs in kind: a centrally operated product with a token attached to its capacity, which makes the proposition simpler and the counterparty risk larger.
Developers and AI agents needing continuous inference without per-request billing, the primary use. Applications with predictable daily budgets, where a fixed allowance plans better than metered spend. Users wanting privacy or model access that mainstream providers restrict.
VVV, sVVV, and DIEM are ERC-20 tokens on Base, so custody inherits Base's security while staking and cooldowns run on Venice's contracts. Service-level security is separate: requests travel over encrypted TLS through Venice's proxy to model providers, and prompt and response content is not stored or logged for normal inference, with stronger modes adding TEE isolation.
The main risk is that the token's utility depends on one private company continuing to operate and honor the compute claim; no protocol enforces DIEM redemption if Venice stops serving inference. Emissions dilute holders who do not stake, and the mint rate rises as DIEM supply grows, so compute claimable per token is not fixed. Its content policy also carries regulatory and payment-processor risk most providers avoid.
Venice is one of the more coherent attempts at a real question: how do you buy AI compute in a way that is not metered, not surveilled, and not revocable at a provider's whim. Staking for capacity, then making that capacity tradeable, is a concrete answer.
VVV trades on decentralized exchanges on Base, where it launched with liquidity on Aerodrome, and on several centralized exchanges. Listings change, so check the markets section on this page. When withdrawing, confirm the network is Base; another chain means permanent loss.
VVV is an ERC-20 on Base, so any Ethereum-compatible wallet configured for Base holds it, and hardware wallets are stronger for long-term holdings. Stakers need a wallet that can reach Venice's contracts. Note that sVVV and DIEM are distinct tokens, and exchange-held VVV cannot be staked.
